A few ideas from a heavy user

Hi, not sure if this is the right area, please move it if needed.

First up, and this is part feature and part bug fix (imo). I use playlists heavily on Roon, and lately I am having so many issues with albums that I add to my library breaking randomly down the line, same with individual songs in playlists. Every time the behavior is the same, Roon skips the song saying track could not be played. Going to the album and looking at versions shows a new version of the album that has recently hit whatever streaming service I use (90% of the time its Qobuz), and if I switch to that new version of the album things play. Every time this happens I have not discerned any changes to the album, so I don’t know what’s going on.

This is incredibly frustrating as having to go remove the existing album/song then go add the song/album from the updated listing is tedious, and I’m losing my play counts which I really like keeping (Two examples being USB by fred again.. and Bigger than all of us by Above and Beyond). Either the Roon team needs to talk to Qobuz to get them to stop breaking the linking of albums in Roon, or Roon needs to develop some way to fix this behind the scenes in real-time. It’s getting to the point where all of my playlists have songs that don’t play, due to this issue.

Second is sorta minor, but I’m a big fan of smart playlists in iTunes, and use them for many (imo) cool viewpoints to my library. One of those is seeing my most played music. In Roon currently, you can get albums sorted by most played, but under songs there is no such option. Can that be added?

I’ve also been experimenting with Roon smart playlists to mimic my “top 200 most played” playlist in iTunes (as roon plays don’t update those) and while I can make a smart playlist with a ‘focus’ of a time period, then sort by plays, it winds up being a HUGE playlist for me going all the way down to songs with just 1 play. Can you either let me set a ‘focus’ of play counts that transcends all of my library (preferred) which would then let me add other filters, and let there be a selectible cutoff? By this I mean something like ‘show my top played songs, all having at least 50/100/200 plays’

I think smart playlists can give someone a ton of insight into their library, and hope the team expands on it.

Thanks!

The Roon founders didn’t use playlists so they were even more bare boned in the past.

We’ve asked for smart configurable playlists from day one. Many years later it’s obviously not something they are interested in.

Qobuz (as well as Tidal - it’s the nature of streaming) albums being replaced with other versions (and then losing metadata in Roon) is an old problem with many posts and suggestions about it. For playlists, you can use Roon’s Playlist Improver to replace them (though it doesn’t always find them all, and you lose metadata anyway).

You can find some info and further links here:

Hello. In some playlists I have “Improver”, in other I don’t. The “Improver” button is absent. It happens with all types of playlists: Roon playlists, Tidal Playlists, Qobuz playlists and my own playlists made in Roon by me with both Qobuz and Tidal titles. Can I do something ? Thank you.

Maybe there is nothing to improve so doesn’t show a disabled button , maybe

Yes! I thought that.. There is nothing to improve.. so no button for improvements.. Thank you..

Ah… that is unfortunate.

Not surprising though, i figured other people were running into this. I’m still hopeful that roon can find a solution, but we shall see!
