A Roon on (Synology) NAS Primer

You use any device that can run a Roon control app: Windows PC/laptop, Android tablet, Android phone. Or Apple Mac/MacBook, iPad, iPhone. (Only computers with Windows or macOS provide all features; tablets are close but few minor things are missing, phones are quite limited in what you can do).

It doesn’t matter for this whether the Roon server runs on a NAS or Windows, Mac, Linux, or Roon OS (Nucleus/ROCK)

I installed roon on nas and that’s as far as I get. I added it in program files. I click run then nothing. I cannot find anywhere to tell me what to do next. I am sure I am an idiot but is there any documentation that will tell me whats next. I have no clue on how to access it.

The NAS only runs the Roon server. To actually use it, like I wrote in the post you replied to…

You can find the apps for mobile devices on the app stores (use the app called „Roon“) and for PC/Mac the download is here:

You will also need a trial account:

Quick newbie question: I moved my Roon Core to the Synology DS923+ NAS that held my music. I set up the database in a different folder on the NAS. Now I’d like to move it to an external SSD I’ve purchased and attached. Can I move the database, or is it easier to just uninstall ROON and reinstall it?

In my recollection (it’s been a while), you will need to uninstall Roon; copy the database to the new location; then reinstall the RoonOnNAS package, pointing to the new database location during the installation wizard.

Please be aware that if you run TWO external drives via USB (and not just the SSD you installed for Roon), Synology DSM might not mount the two external drives in the same order and could “lose” the reference to the correct drive upon each DSM reboot. When I had this configuration, I got around this by using an external eSATA based drive, which doesn’t present this issue. The parts I used to build this were noted in my original opening post to this thread.

HI. More stumbling around. Having got Roon working on my DS923+, and deciding that was teh way to go, I set about ‘upgrading’ the NAS. First I upgraded the internal RAM to 32Gb. All good. Then I installed 2 x Synology M.2 NVMe 400Gb and set them up as a second volume. I then uninstalled Roon server from the NAS, and reinstalled it on the new NVMe volume, with the database also on that volume, but pointing to the Music folder on Volume 1. I then went into Control Panel/Shared Folders and set Read/Write Permissions for all admin level users.
But now when I open the Roon app on my iPad it (says it) connects to the Roon server, and then sits on the wiggly semicircle thing - so far for 2 hours.
Any thoughts gratefully received.

Cringing apology - I uninstalled yet again, and reinstalled yet again, and this time it led me to the usual processes (TIDAL, folders etc), and now it’s working. I’m still not sure what I did different. Perhaps it got its morning coffee and decided to work?

Not sure if this thread should be marked as solved

because this is a long-running thread about Roon on Synology, far larger than this recent support issue

Thanks. (And also, my OP is considered Wiki content so that I can update it as needed.)

I’m wondering about the meaning of this (used ram)

after installing roon on the synology without using it

How much RAM do you have installed?
If you go to “Task Manager” on the left side meny, how much RAM is Roon using?

This is mine with 16 GB of RAM:

What does the Task Manager say?

there are 40GB RAM on my DS1522+

,
but am I right, this is RAM of my PC, not of the Synology?!

Right - that is RAM on your PC. Your Synology has this view as well - just select “Task Manager” from the left hand navigation…sorry I cropped it from my original screenshot:

Wow. Are you using the Roon on NAS package from Christopher Rieke?

Also, what happens when you click on the “Prozesse” tab?

How large is your collection?

1 yes

I just wanted to try out whether it makes sense to use the NAS as a server. I actually have a separate ROCK, but trying things out is the best way to learn…

Then I would say that you are doing OK with that RAM usage. Roon is designed to use up the RAM you make available to it for its in-RAM database. So long as you can use Roon smoothly to enjoy your music, there is nothing to worry about. Pröst!
