Often I find albums I want to listen to but can’t do it right away. It would be nice to be able to save albums in a “want to listen” tag before deciding to add to the library or not. This can keep my library focused on music I know I like.
Currently you can save music to a playlist without adding them to a library, but it’s track based rather than album based.
This is how I handle new releases I want to play. But I add the entire album to the playlist, and simply let the playlist run. If I want to revisit, or play something else, I hold the queue on another zone, or locate the album and play from there.
I’ve been advocating for “album playlists” for over 20 years, but it feels like their value often goes unnoticed. For me, these playlists are a deeply personal way to create sub-collections from my library—albums I intentionally group together based on nothing other than my own choice. There’s no AI, no automation, no tagging—this is something only I can curate.
Take this as an example: no library manager, whether it’s Roon or any other, can compile all the albums by artists I’ve seen at a specific festival. Why? Because they simply don’t understand the personal connections I make. And that’s just one example. For me, it’s all about ultimate personalization and flexibility—tailoring my music experience in a way that no system or feature can replicate.
Is there anyone else who sees the potential in this? Or perhaps a way forward to make this idea resonate?
I am using tags to handle situations like this. The main drawback I’ve found here is that an album must be in my library in order to add it to a tag. Other than that limitation, they work really well and I love roon’s tagging functionality for exactly the reason you describe.
I see my library as something quite dynamic. As my tags.
When I find an album I want to listen to later, I add to library and to a tag “Listen later”. Later on, I will listen to it and or keep it in my library and changing to another tag (like Heavy rotation) , or just remove it from my library. I try to not get many albums on this Listen later tag.
