About Roon Bridge (2.0 channel only?)

hello,

I would like to implement an endpoint (Mac mini or Raspberry Pi), connected via USB to an external DAC for DSD/stereo, and via HDMI to my AVR for multichannel music (PCM).

I would like to know if Roon Bridge can manage only 2.0, or also multichannel streams.

thanks for sharing
Andrea

Multi (at least via Linux / ALSA) and you can set it up so the USB and HDMI are 2 different endpoints.

HDMI can take a little set-up (channel mapping) but it works. Note that, unless they (they being whoever does the OS / Kernel / ALSA) fixed it, a Pi will only do 16 bit audio on HDMI. For this reason I ended up using a little mini pc with Linux.

thank, and what about a mini? I have an intel i5 gathering dust

This I do not know as I’ve never used a mac as an endpoint. Will have to wait for others to jump-in.

Of course the “just try it” option is always available if you’ve got it sitting there.

Whilst Roon Bridge can handle multi-channel audio, I believe that there is an issue with the Raspberry Pi 3 and 4. The HDMI implementation only supports two channel.

I don’t know what the situation is with the RPi5.

I’ve done multi on a 4 but at 16 bit.

Maybe not recently but I have.

so, no options for a multichannel 24 bit with a Pi, right? In my case it would be passthrough, as the AVR connected would support DSD64 (converted to PCM by his DAC) and PCM multichannel via HDMI.
