Accessibility Issues: Remote App not Usable (Voiceover iOS)

Description of Issue

Hello. I use VoiceOver on iOS 16.3, on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The Roon Remote app is completely inaccessible (no labels or indications of buttons, cannot pick up text, appears as a blank screen). This was tested on multiple pages within the app, with someone else navigating between them when the buttons to do so were not able to be used by me.

  1. Is this a known issue?

  2. When is this being addressed?

  3. If this is not being addressed, what is the process to get a refund?

This is something that is absolutely not acceptable in this day and age.

No wonder VoiceOver does not pick up text on a Roon screen. There is usually no text on a Roon screen, in the sense that you cannot do any cut and paste to extract parts of what is displayed, pick up a button or an image. The whole Roon display is just a big graphic without any accessible structure (for the user at least). Here Roon behaves very differently from web apps or conventional apps we are used to. This is by design, and cannot be changed.

Ah, thank you. That is… unwelcome information. I had searched after posting, and found similar posts as early as 2015 or before. Frankly, the fact that it hasn’t been attempted at all is inexcusable.

I know you are not affiliated with Roon Labs, but do want to thank you for taking the time to reply. Do you happen to know how I would go about requesting a refund?

Also, tagging @danny here, with the same question.

We’ve addressed this better with Roon ARC - did you try it out? It’s not perfect, but way better than Roon Remote.

I’ve not tried Roon ARC yet, but will give that a shot this afternoon, and touch base here this evening. Is there anything that Roon Remote is able to do that ARC cannot?

Thank you for your response.

I’ve given it a try with Roon ARC. Some things are a little better, but unfortunately, it’s still not really usable. Some (quick) examples of things I noticed: scrolling is inconsistent. For example, I’ll be in the middle of reading something and it will scroll back to the top automatically, losing my place. On artist pages specifically, I’m unable to scroll / read past a certain point. Throughout the app, there are several unlabeled button elements.

I do appreciate that there was more work put towards ARC, but it is currently unusable, as it is, for me. Who would I need to contact about a refund for the month subscription?

Thank you.

We don’t refund monthly subscriptions because the fees we have to “eat” are quite high. Instead, we offer a generous trial, so you can work out issues like this for free.

What you’ve done is a bit strange.

First, you signed up for a free trial. Then 20 minutes later, you canceled it. Then 10 minutes later, you purchased a monthly. What’s going on?

I’ll talk to accounts. Maybe they can do a partial refund.

Hello,

I signed up to test it, then cancelled when I noticed it was not accessible on the app.

I found a setting that I thought might make the remote app usable, but was unable to test it to see if it worked without a running Roon Core, so I signed back up, not realizing (until I started the process) that it would not allow continuation of the 30 day trial, but would charge right away. I really wanted to try and make this work, but unfortunately, even with ARC, it just can’t do what I need it to.

ok… our policy is 30 days 100% money-back guarantee only on a yearly subscription, but I’ve asked the team to do something.
