Hi @Tim_deCocq,
Thanks for reaching out with your message! For us to be able to better assist you, can we kindly ask that you resubmit a proper support ticket by filling out the questionnaire using the below link? Please select the option that best matches your specific issue type instead of simply selecting “other”, as this form was created to help diagnose issues while gathering information and it will allow the support team to be able to best assist with your specific issue type. Thank you!
You told me to use the correct form and to resubmit my question. Well, this is the exact same form I used!! Roon has terrible tech support and customer service. Okay here I go again: I recently purchased a new Apple 15" Mac Book Air which I would like to use as my new Roon Server. I am currently using my 9 year old MacBook Pro, but I am having issues with that laptop. I was able to download the Roon app to my new lap top, but I believe that this is causing all sorts of trouble, as I now realize that I can only have 1 server. My other devices (ie my apple Ipad, and my old MacBook Pro) can only be used as remotes. In easy to understand layman's terms: (1) How do I transfer Roon to my new Mac Book Air in order to make it my new server? (2) How do I make and use my old lap top the remote device? (My Ipad seems to be working fine as a remote)Maybe I can only have 1 remote device? Kindly remember that I do not understand all your technical terms so give it to me in easy step by step instructions Tim
Describe your network setup
I used an integrated Router/Modem from Shaw; my internet provider. I am unable to find the manufacturer or Model number. That said, my problems only began when I purchased my new laptop. ie My old lap top(mac book pro) and my new Mac Book Air seem to be in conflict with each other. It seems that I might have tried to set them both up as servers.
Thanks for the additional information! The good news here is that we should be able to get you set up and running pretty easily - and I completely understand your frustration, getting Roon setup across multiple devices can definitely be a bit confusing at first!
An important thing to remember - when you download Roon on your Mac, or any computer for that matter, you’re really downloading two things: Roon (the application you use to navigate and control Roon with) and Roon Server (the brain of your system, which holds your database and all your settings/customizations.)
Before anything else, do you have any saved backups from your older MacBook Pro? You’ll want to create a backup so you can restore your current Roon database onto your new Macbook Air. If you don’t mind starting fresh, then you can ignore this.
Here’s more info on how to create backups:
You could set up a backup location to an external drive that is plugged into your Macbook pro, and then move the external drive over to your Macbook Air when you’re ready to restore your Roon database.
Backups aside, when you downloaded Roon on your new MBA, you should be prompted with the option to set this machine up as your Server, did you see this option? You’ll probably be met with the message that you’ll need to de-authorize your older MacBook Pro - nothing to worry about here, you can always reauthorize it if you need to down the road. But for now, go ahead and de-authorize it.
This will allow you to authorize your new MBA to run as your Roon Server.
Once you do this, you can then open Roon on your older Macbook Pro, and it should show you your new Macbook Air with Roon Server online and active (you’ll need to keep your Macbook Air powered on and connected to your network in order to use it on other devices.)
I’ll stop here for now - let me know if the above makes sense, and if you have any questions along the way!
