Description of Issue

I would like to maximize the sound quality experience by reducing any noise on the USB connection to my headphone amp. I also would like to avoid turning on my laptop to start Roon core. My ideal setup would have an always on Core running on my WiFi network and connect an endpoint to my amp that maximizes sound quality and supports the highest level resolution files (24 bit/384khz and DSD 128 streams). What gear is recommended for this “ideal” setup I am trying to achieve? Thank you.

  1. The machine with the Roon Server (Core) should always be on wired Ethernet if possible. WiFi can work if performance is good, but you know where to look if it doesn’t.

  2. An Intel NUC with ROCK would normally fit the bill of having a no maintenance Roon server, but will require Ethernet. Else some Mac or PC with Windows or Linux whatever you prefer

  3. And thirdly you want a Roon Ready streamer. A Raspberry Pi or something ready made, lots of existing recommendations on the forum if you search. And if it shall include a DAC the price range is very wide and tastes differ

  1. The RoonServer should not be Wifi and should be connected via Ethernet
  2. You need a computer to run the Server, if you don’t want to use the laptop, then just get a computer with your OS of choice. Windows, ROCK, Linux, MacOS, all are fine.
  3. If you want to run DSD and have it play native, then I would suggest by starting with researching the MHA150 and find out what IT needs to accept native DSD. Some hardware will only accept DoP encased DSD from Linux sources. And in that case require a Windows PC running the appropriate drivers. Based on the website and McIntosh supplying a USB driver, that indicates Windows. I would highly suggest contacting McIntosh tech and asking them if this unit can to native DSD with Linux (which include ROCK). If not, then you have your answer on what type of computer you need for point #2.
