I am having difficulty with Airplay 2 devices in Roon. I have done some searching and troubleshooting on my own but can’t seem to get this solved.
My primary use of Roon is to provide whole home audio with some different devices using grouped zones.
I have a lifetime subscription to Roon since 2018. I like the product, warts and all, but it does sometimes make enjoying music harder than it needs to be.
For my grouped zone, I have a pair of Devialet Phantoms and some BlueSound Power Nodes (powering speakers) and BluseSound Nodes for powered sources and I had been running them all using RAAT and it worked well.
Here is my current issue that has me scratching my head…
Last year, we moved house and in the new house I added two Devialet Diones thinking we could use them for home theater and incorporate them into the whole home audio zone. I wronglfully assumed that like the Phantoms they supported RAAT. They do not. But they do support Airplay 2. Airplay 2 and RAAT cannot be grouped together in the same zone. Grouped and synced audio zones only work if using the same audio transport. I decided to use Airplay 2 as the common audio transport for all of the devices in the grouped zone sine they all support Airplay 2 so I switched OFF RAAT and switched ON Airplay 2.
This seems to work BUT the Airplay 2 devices discovery seems like a bit of a mess in Roon. I have multiple devices with duplicate names and duplicate IP addresses (this has been reported by other users) and now I have an audio device (one of the Blue Sound Nodes) that shows Airplay 2 with the IP address of another audio device so Airplay 2 doesn’t work and I can’t access that device over Airplay 2. It shows properly as a RAAT device. The other Blue Sound devices seem to display properly and they work properly with other applications using Airplay 2. The duplicate devices and IP addresses seem to be unique to Roon and Airplay 2.
I am using an Ubiquity UDM SE router, I have enabled mDNS, I have flushed the DNS cache in the router (from researching the forums mDNS and the router are implicated as being the issue - I am not so sure) does anyone have any other solid advice (other than just use RAAT and ditch Airplay 2) before I give up on Airplay 2 and Roon?
I know this is a technical support question, and I tried to submit a technical support query but I find the format of “the form” (when I could get it to work) to be suboptimal to say the least.
Any suggestions on what I might try next is appreciated. At this point I am accepting that Airplay 2 and Roon compatibility might not be fully baked and I am considering if my only option is to add an external RAAT to the Devialet Diones via optical input and ditch Airplay 2.
