Airplay and groups [Ticket In]

Hi

I have the following problem:
I have 2 Airplay devices (Sonos Move 2 and a Bluetooth Pulse M) and when I add them to a group I am unable to play any music on them.

My Setup:
Roon Core on a Austor AS5402T
The 2 Endpoints:
Sonos Move 2 + Bluetooth Pulse M

Roon Core connecte wired via UTP
The Endpoints connected via wifi.

Some of my music is stored on the Asustor NAS, but I mainly stream from Qobuz.

Thanks for looking into it.

Hello @Ronny_Ruyters ,

Thanks for reaching out. Can you please try to enable Airplay compatability mode when grouping these devices? This setting is located in Device Setup → Advanced → Compatability mode. Also, just to confirm when these devices are not grouped, you do not have any issue, correct?

Hi Noris

Compatibility mode is enabled on both devices.

And yes, when I play on each of them individually I don’t have any problems

Regards

Ronny

Good day @Ronny_Ruyters !

Thanks for confirming that.

We already have an internal ticket open for R&D similar to yours .

In common we can see that this issue affects Sonos devices.

We would like to ask you to test Airplay grouping with some 2 other devices but Sonos. Can you please try that and confirm wheter Airplay pair of non sonos devices work ? Thanks!

And can you please clarify does the playback goes on in roon but it’s just no sound on speakers or the playback does not even start in Roon ? THanks!

Hi Alex,

I will try and test with another Airplay device this evening or so.

What I noticed past weeks was that playback on the Bluesound did start but not on the Sonos.
However, last couple of days even on the Bluesound the playback does not start.

This is shown in the screenshots it looks like playback started (showing the pause button) but it never actually starts.

Will give an extra update this evening.

Regards
Ronny

just did a test.
I have 3 Airplay 2 devices

  1. Sonos Move 2
  2. Bluesound Pulse M
  3. Wiim Pro

I tried several combinations of groups and the Wiim Pro is the only one that starts playback. The Pulse and the Move don’t do any playback when placed in a group.

Regards
Ronny

Hey @Ronny_Ruyters,

Thanks so much for giving that a try.

As a next step, could you please reboot your Roon Server fully twice, and then reproduce the issue and share the track name?

This will provide additional information to our development team. Thank you!

Hi Benjamin

I just stopped and started Roon server 2 times and than played ‘Falling, Catching’ of the Philharmonics album of Agnes Obel.

Still the same, only plays on the Wiim, not the Sonos or the Bluesound device.

Hello @Ronny_Ruyters

Thank you for the update.

The restart was necessary to enable the additional diagnostic layer. We have collected a new subset of the logs and will follow up here after review with the R&D team.

Hello @Ronny_Ruyters,

By any chance, have you had a moment to restart your server, reproduce the issue, and share the exact timestamp with us once again?

I will do this this evening or in the weekend when I am at home.

Just a 1 time restart this time?

Hello @Ronny_Ruyters ,

Yes, you are correct, two restarts is better to ensure the diagnostic mode is properly picked up, please do so when you have a chance, reproduce the issue and let us know after here, thanks!

I just rebooted 2 times and than started playing Max Richter Sleep with the track Dream 1 (before the wind blows it all away) Pt.1 and Pt.2

Thank you @Ronny_Ruyters! We have collected the information we need and have shared it with development.

We appreciate your ongoing patience here! :raising_hands:

any news on this issue?

Hi @Ronny_Ruyters,

No updates yet, unfortunately, our team is still investigating further. That said, there does seem to be an additional Sonos bug in their own implementation of Airplay2 as well, since there are many people complaining about Airplay issues on sonos forums. We’re not familiar with the inner workings there, but thought it important to mention to you as well.

We’ll follow up once there is new information to share. Thanks again for your long-standing patience!
