AirPlay not working on Raspberry Pi 4 running Ropieee

I just installed Ropieee on my Pi 4 and its works for streaming audio but can’t get airplay to work. my iphone shows the Ropieee as an airplay device but can’t get any audio. In my Ropieee settings, I have no option to select any audio output on the airplay tab.

my log is 05d7208fd52cce40

Well, there you have it. You have no output enabled, so that’s the reason why you can’t use Airplay. Either a HAT or a USB DAC is required. See the documentation

That know that makes sense but for the fact that it worked for about 10 minutes then stopped.

But with what output? As you have not configured it?

It’s connected to my external dac. It’s running fine as a Roon endpoint.

At the time of the feedback your external DAC was not connected. And not configured as output for Airplay (they are related, because you can only select output that actually exists - a HAT or a DAC).

Roon does not need explicit configuration of the output device, but Airplay does.

So please configure an output in the UI (that is connected: which you can see on the audio tab) - so I can investigate if there’s something wrong. Right now that’s just not possible because there is no audio output configured for Airplay.

Maybe if I tell you about my entire set up you will be able to help me sort things out.

I have a Okto Research 8 DAC. It has the optional Raspberry Pi 4 B already installed internally. To use it as a Roon endpoint, I downloaded and installed Ropieee onto the Pi. So far so good.

I have a PC that has JRivers installed with a couple of plugins including Dirac. I want to use Ropieee as a Roon endpoint for better audio than usb, but I’m having issues. I can’t figure out how to get JRivers to recognize Ropieee as an audio output to my DAC.

I have both the DAC and PC connected via ethernet on the same network. In addition to having issues with Airplay and DLNA, I now can’t seem to get the endpoint working properly.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You can read this post

and replace HQPlayer with RoPieee/UPNP

Ok, but I can only help you by making things smaller, not bigger

And to start with Airplay: you don’t have an output configured for Airplay, and at the time you sent me the feedback the Okto was also not visible within RoPieee. And that’s the reason why Airplay is not working.

What are the steps to make the Okto dac visible to Ropieee? I must have inadvertently had things correct as AirPlay worked for a brief time. J probably messed up trying to get the endpoint working.

Nothing. On the audio tab you should see the DAC listed. If that’s the case, you can configure Airplay and select the DAC as output.

I’m not a techie, but know my way around a bit.

I opened up Ropieee a couple of hours ago and there was an update available so I did that.

Lo and behold I hade the options to select my dac as an output. Victory I thought. I made the output selection but stupidly didn’t test it. I then got into my JRivers to see if I could get it to recognize Ropieee via DNLA. I had no luck (so frustrating).

When I went back to Ropieee, I no longer had the ability to select the AirPlay output.

I’m about ready to give up.

Uhhh… your talking about Airplay, and now your talking about DLNA.

It would help if me the issue smaller, not bigger: so first let’s see if you can play audio directly via Roon. Send me feedback, so I can have a look if the basics are all ok.

And then we can look at the other services, but step by step. We can start with DLNA, and then move on.

I’m pretty confident that we can figure this out.

Thanks

Just sent a log. 7136d04d42e6729

Just can’t figure out why it will recognize my dac one minute and not the next.

Update….

Just sent new log 70c792d1bb1b2ba7

I reinstalled the Roon bridge. Now DLNA and AirPlay are showing output. Do things look right to you now?

Update 2………..

AirPlay is working yea!

The problem now is with having Ropieee being a Roon endpoint for my system. I use JRivers on my PC for my Dirac and X-talk shaper plugins. I still can’t seem to get JRivers to recognize Ropieee as a DLNA server. I can get Roon to work with Ropieee via usb (won’t work via Ethernet for some reason) but can’t use my plugins via JRivers.

Hope this makes sense and is helpful.

Thanks for all the help!

RoPieee isn’t a DLNA server. RoPieee can act as an UPnP/DLNA endpoint.

Well, you just went past my tech level. I don’t know the difference between DLNA and a UPnP/DLNA and what they are even.

Did you have a look to the post I addressed to you in my previous post?

Yes, I looked at your post but was not able to find or figure out how to create the DLNA your were suggesting. Your screen shots didn’t make sense to me. No matter what I try, I can’t seem to get Ropieee and media center to talk to each other. Roon says they can’t work together, although I know others that are making it work.
