Album categorization display inconstencies

I don’t understand why albums are so badly categorized even though the fields to properly sort and categorize them are present and correct.

This is one of my biggest annoyances to be honest.

Take A Perfect Circle for instance.

Discography shows as follows:

When I open their debut, Mer de Noms, it shows this part to the right of the description:

The first three will something similar, then the fourth in the line is aMOTION, and it shows as follows:

Why is that listed under main albums when it clearly shows Type: Compilation?

Same goes for the next album, which is a compilation too.

Then there is Stone and Echo, Live at Red Rocks. Title says it all, its a Live album. It shows as follows:

I can only guess as to why this shows differently because there is no description?

Either way it has the correct label showing Type: Live.

So from the 9 albums, 5 are incorrect. I picked this artist because its one of the easier ones to digest. Don’t get me started on Bob Dylan I will burst out in tears. Or Dream Theater. Or … almost any artist with more than 3 albums. This is not an isolated issue, it’s everywhere.

Why is this? I would think its so easy when the labels are correct, why is Roon not sorting and categorizing them correctly?

This is because Roon thinks differently about your album categories than, say, AllMusic.

In Roon terms, “compilations” are not as on A Perfect Circle Songs, Albums, Reviews, Bio &... | AllMusic but rather they are albums that are not part of the artists’ catalog at all (i.e., Various Artists-based compilations).

I realize this may not be what you want or like. There have been many discussions in here about that.

Cheers!

So does that imply that the little screenshots I made with the type field is taken from AllMusic?

I will resist the incredibly strong urge to rant loudly and be a good civilian.

My 2c, live albums and compilations should be in their own sections. They are not “main albums” at all. V/A compilations is another category again.

Given that Roon generally has enough info to form these categories, and indeed displays it on the album screen, honestly I have no idea why it does not otherwise acknowledge the categories. It’s an open goal.

Yes, that is where that comes from, right or wrong.
