Allo sparky and HQPlayer NAA

I have just set-up dietpi on my new sparky board and installed the NAA and Roonbridge software.

I am having trouble with the NAA.
At the end of songs the next one will not play, I get a Roon Transport lost control of the audio device message.

When I use HQP on its own I can play an album but once I press stop the HQP loses connection to my sparky NAA connects to my other NAA raspberry Pi in a second system.

When I disconnect the second device HQPlayer still disconnects and chooses a “default” device and the allo does not show up, wait a second and it does again.

some screenshots

These are the settings, pressing play in Roon or HQP play music (and very nicely too)

press stop and try to play something immediately and no sound comes out and now the settings show

>br>
with no allo hugo available

wait a few moments and it is selected again as per first picture.

The same set-up works with a Raspberry Pi without this issue.

So can @jussi_laako @Dan_Knight @ALLO_audio_boards @allo.com throw some light on where the problem might be and how I might resolve it?

Thanks

Hi,

Firstly, lets enable logging for NAA:

echo -e "NETWORKAUDIOD_LOGFILE='/var/log/naadaemon.log'" > /etc/default/networkaudiod dietpi-services restart

Next, I need you to replicate the issues you reported with HQplayer and Roon “lost device”, this should ensure log files are filled with useful info.

Once thats done, please paste results of the logs (or upload files):

cat /var/log/naadaemon.log
cat /var/log/RoonBridge_log.txt
cat /var/log/RAATServer_log.txt
dmesg | grep usb

So what I’ve done here is start HQPlayer, play Rory Gallagher Let me in, stop it after a few seconds, choose another track (Ain’t too good) and the track does not play.

Hi John,

Thanks.
Was there no entries generated in the logs above? Really need those aswell if possible

sorry that’s my limited linux knowledge, pasted the 4 lines together!

I’d did the same process, rebooted NAA, started HQP on PC.
Played one song for a few seconds, stopped, thrid to play another immediately but it didn’t; play.

I didn’t highlight the sections that are big and in bold, don’t know how that happened!

Thanks again,

John

Thanks John,

Is the USB DAC attached to the USB 3.0 socket? If so, can you try the USB 2.0 socket and re-run a quick test?

@jussi_laako

Looks like the below is causing a automatic disconnect of device in NAA Daemon (and HQplayer)? Any ideas?

It is attached to the USB 2.0 socket Dan, is it worth trying the 3.0?

thanks
John

@Dan_Knight @jussi_laako

well worth trying as it turns out, USB 3.0 does not seem to have an issue holding connection in either HQP or HQP via Roon. (a quick test admittedly so hopefully I wont be back again with other issues, but it seems resolved).

Thanks for all your help Dan, much appreciated.

Spoke too soon!

I tried some test tones to look at another problem I am having

and this test tone instead of being a clear tone is more like a series of 1 sec bleeps at auto suample rate, reducing it to 176 got a continuous tone again.

here are the same logs

Always happens lol

Ok, i’d like to run some tests of my own and see if I can replicate. Unfortunately, my trial for HQplayer has expired.

@jussi_laako
Is there any possibility of extending the trial period/license of HQPlayer, for purely support/dev purposes?

Please send me email…

Hi,

Allo have released an update for Sparky kernel, this should resolve the USB issues you are experiencing.

To install it, please can you run the following commands:

wget https://github.com/sparkysbc/sparky_linux_images/raw/master/usbdac_mod_uImage.tar.bz2
tar -jxvf usbdac_mod_uImage.tar.bz2 -C /boot
reboot

Once completed, please re-run your tests with the USB DAC, and let us know the results.

If you experience any issues with the sound quality, or loss of device, please paste results of:

dmesg | grep usb

Hi Dan,

Thanks once again for your help.

I ran the commands above (one at a time this time) and the USB 2.0 sockets kept loosing a connection as before (with HQPlayer, Roon doesn’t lose connection through USB 2.0
ON USB 3.0. I tried the test tone again.

I set up HQPlayer upsampling to 352.8kHz. The stuttering was gone but alas every so often, maybe 1 in 4 plays there is a crackle, more like interference than an imperfection in the tone.

Then I ran the test signal just through Roon, not using the HQP NAA. It did better but the crackle did appear, maybe 1 in 6. I tried this both upsampling and straight through in Roon with the same result.

Next I got out my Pi3 and connected it up and played the same test signal though Roon.

No crackle or interference this time.

now listening to this over an over is tinnitus inducing and I don’t think I’d hear the crackle listening to music (you’d probably notice it in speech).

Probably not a scientifically rigourous as one would like but as I say there is only so often one can listen to a test tone!

I have not tested the test tone through USB 2.0 with Roon.

Here is the log you asked for.

We tested in our office…and we are unable to replicate the problem with the USB dacs we have

We will continue but we need to get hold of your specific DAC…not an easy task.

We will test a USB HiSpeed as well.
