AMD Ryzen AI 300 series CPUs?

I’m not where to ask this and I did do a search but didn’t find what I’m looking for so new thread with question…

I’m taking on a project to build a smaller Roon + HQPlayer box. Has anyone got experience with the new AMD AI CPUs? On paper and in testing they are a beast of a processor but may completely miss the mark as related to HQPlayer. As example the Max 390 has 12 cores running at 3.1 Ghz / 5Ghz boost at 55 TDP. A few companies are doing small’ish form factor builds with these CPUs.

@jussi_laako I know you abandoned AMD GPUs a while ago but anything new on your side related to these new CPUs which have 8050S Graphics and supposedly can use ROCm? Thank you.

My goal would be PCM 44/48 → 1536kHz but I’d be ecstatic if I could get to PCM 44/48 → DSD256.

If I don’t see any answers I may just pull the trigger and start experimenting. Let me know if anyone is interested in the journey and I’ll document it.

Happy listening.

AMD’s ROCm support for different GPU models on different platforms has been very sporadic and changing all the time. And also has side effects, like if you have AMD GPU that is not supported, the software fails to start altogether. So it is rather horrifying compared to Nvidia’s CUDA.

Since RPi5 can do DSD256 already, and base model Mac Mini M4 can do DSD512 (even with DAC corrections, but then limited settings choices), it shouldn’t be difficult goal with plain CPU.

Regarding AMD CPUs and HQPlayer use, it is important to check that the CCD/CCX configuration is symmetric. So that each CCD/CCX has same number of (active) CPU cores. Otherwise there will be a performance hit.
