An ARC reliability observation

I hope your experiance with ARC will be as good as mine some day soon.

@PeterD - I could easily use WireGuard but I don’t want to have to. The fact you are using a VPN to get “rock solid” performance is an indication that you are likely having problems with ARC as designed - perhaps more than others here.

To reiterate - ARC works perfectly for me if I don’t 1) start at home on WiFi, 2) lose all connections, and expect ARC to 3) automatically resume on cellular. If any of those three things aren’t at play — most pertinently, if I just wait to use ARC until I have a cell signal — all is good, and I presume that is the “happy path” that the Roon developers mostly test and prioritize.

Here you are wrong, i use ARC also without VPN without any problems.
But prefer the VPN in place because of privacy issues.

Feel free to blame ARC for all issues with it.

Not my experience with ARC.

ARC continues playing if I leave the house and get out of WiFi range. I don’t have to wait for my iPhone SE to switch to cellular before turning on ARC.

It just works, and I’ve never used or installed a VPN in my life.

I had similar problems switching from wifi to cellular. I would start arc at home on wifi and as soon as I got out of range it would stop. I would have to pull over and restart it.

Then I started turning off wifi before starting arc and then leaving home. This seemed to be more reliable. I understand @DDPS can’t do this because no cellular service at home.

Anyway, that got to be annoying, plus I got frequent disconnects/stoppage when out and about, so I pretty much gave up on arc.

The tidal app works ~100% of the time when leaving home and wherever there is cell service, so I use that.

Peoples use habits can contribute to seeing issues or not. I guess I never see this, because I turn off Wifi when I leave the house and then turn on Blutooth. And do the opposite when I get home. I never have Wifi on my phone active when I am out of the house, and, only have blutooth on when I need to use it specifically, otherwise it is off.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. I believe the biggest factor is the cellular provider, some networks are just oversubscribed and have less than stellar data coverage, arcs reliability has improved ten fold since switching provider recently, same phone same home network which is enterprise gear. I still have one or two deadzones on my commute but it’s managed okay as long as I am not stuck in that area. But it picks up as soon as there is decent bandwidth again.

Understood, but this isn’t what’s going on in my case. I can use Synology DS Audio flawlessly to make the same travel transition that I wish to with ARC. Been doing it for far longer than ARC has existed.

I agree with this, up to a point- We live in a rural area with spotty cell service and ARC struggles to perform - If I drive 1/2 an hour to town, which has reliable cell service, ARC works well…

The piece I struggle with is, Qobuz does work in our rural area - I get it that there is the added layer with ARC with the home network, but that leaves the house over the internet - Assuming that is performing correctly, (which I believe in my case it does, as ARC does work in places with strong cell service and 5G) I don’t see why ARC shouldn’t perform as well as Qobuz over cell in areas with less than 5 bars and and 5G?

Well this is the part that is likely a lot to do with your Internet connection at home. Qobuz uses a content delivery network (CDN), which essentially caches content at places at locations all around the Internet, resulting in fewer hops from your cellular endpoint. Your home network is just one place with no CDN, creating a more tortuous route in comparison.

I must note to others following my original post, however, that this doesn’t explain why Synology DS Audio works so seamlessly for me during my broken up journey, while ARC, using the identical network path, doesn’t.

What are your ARC settings, comparable to the synology app? As are you streaming native, using the bandwidth limiting options? Arc also has to talk to Roons servers so any issue there would cause it to bomb as well. Who is your provider some users have had issues with Vodafone internet and ARC but on Android devices not Apple.

Bandwidth limiting, which is equivalent to my DS Audio’s transcoding settings.

It’s just a network transition thing. I’m wondering if they don’t adequately test dual stack to dual stack configurations.

My cell provider is Verizon. Sorry; I thought I mentioned that earlier. I didn’t.

I would agree something in the network stack is problematic. Why it also crashes out Roon server is an odd one.

Since last week, the same thing happens to me while using Arc. I always listen to playlists while commuting on the train. These playlists are mixed local (downloaded to the phone) and Tidal tracks. Several times the last few days, Arc stopped while switching to a new Tidal track, mentioning a ‘poor connection’.
When this happens, all Tidal tracks become unplayable in Arc. Back home, Roon Server on my Sonicorbiter machine appers to have crashed. After a restart, Roon and Roon Arc both are operational again.

Yes exactly what a number of us have had happen. All Rock users the ones I know of.

This is what is happening to me lately.
Only solution is to kill the app from a task manager then I can carry on listening.

And Arc dies on way home for no reason. PlexAmp working fine. No doubt it’s killed the core as per usual .

Same here. Arc stopped while on the train. It can only play downloaded (to the phone) files again. I won’t be home until tomorrow, but sure enough the core has died.

Yeah killed mine to. I have put a support ticket in so those experiencing the same thing please add so we might get some momentum.
