I’ve noticed a strange error with playback on Android devices (Hi end Samsung devices)
I’ve used both my phone and tablet with Roon ARC with no problems when commuting for example. The device is then connected to a FiiO KA5 device who does the job.
Recently I bought a stationary headphone amp with no DAC, but since I have three different typesI was not worries.
Firstly, I connected a Schiit Audio Modi+ who works great in this respect. Then this is connected to the headphone amp with RCA’s. To my great suprise this do not play audio trough ARC at all suddenly and the track just wont start. This is with any of the android devices connected. TheKA5 DAC has two outputs, regular 3,5 headphone jack and some kind of spdif with RCA’s at the other end of the cable. So, switched DACs and tried again an the same error accour. Lastly I tried the KA5 connected directly to my headphones, and suddenly the playback starts.
I find this very strange since the Schiit audio dac has been a endpoint for about two years with no problems at all. Both devices get regonized both with Roon controll app for android, and they the KA5 will output 512 samplerate pcm and 256 DSD in ARC. The schiit Audio maxes at 192/32 pcm.
Just for testing purposes I ran Usb audio player for Android and accessed my NAS over the network. And then suddenly, both DACs had no issues with playback. With arc in general I have no problem to get for example a DSD64 signal sent over 5g on the train with the KA5.
I started to think this is done deliberately so I for instance cannot hook up a stationary dac with Rcas out on another network, thus extending playback to other places for example. Since the KA5 works fine when not using spdif out, but only the 3,5 jack made me draw these conclusions. As mentioned all three solutions worked perfectly when playing from a network drive using USB audio player.
Have anyone noticed this strange restriction or fault in Roon? Playback do not work even when I’m on the same network as the Roon server.
