Android devices only see Nucleus One after rebooting Nucleus One

Roon Server Machine

I have a server on the Nucleus One.

Networking Gear & Setup Details

I’m using an Orbi system with the Nucleus One hardwired to the router and have two satellites in two rooms.

Connected Audio Devices

I connect via wifi using a Windows 11 PC and attempt to connect with my Pixel 8 Pro. I stream using Tidal and Qobuz to my LS60Wireless, LSXII, and Cambridge Audio Evo 150.

Description of Issue

My Windows device finds the Nucleus One server without any issues but both my Android devices (Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung A70) will only detect the server if I reboot the Nucleus One. Once connected it works perfectly but once the app is closed the Nucleus has to be rebooted for the Android device to see the server again. I have tried my girlfriend’s IPhone and it detected the Nucleus One server without any issues. I set a server up on the Windows PC and both Android devices see it.

Thanks for any help with this.

Hi @ADAM_LOWE,
Thanks for writing in to ask us about this issue. I think the best way to troubleshoot this is to take a look at your Nucleus logs. Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Thanks for replying.

I’m trying to find the Nucleusone folder on my Windows machine but without success. I’ve stopped Roon and turned off the server as mentioned on the link you sent. I’ll keep trying to find the logs folder and will update if/when I find it.

It’s not a major issue as I can use the laptop but I was really curious as to why it was happening.

The folder is on the Nucleus. Did you scroll down to the Nucleus log instructions. You connect to the nucleus using windows file manager and then look on the nuclues for those files.

Nucleus Server

Be sure to replace NUCLEUS with NUCLEUSPLUS if you have a Nucleus+, NUCLEUSONE if you have a Nucleus One, and NUCLEUSTITAN if you have a Nucleus Titan.
Using a Windows machine, open File Explorer and navigate to \\NUCLEUS\Data and use Guest as the username and password. You should then see the RoonServer folder.
Using a Mac, open Finder and navigate to smb://NUCLEUS/Data and use Guest as the username and password. You should then see the RoonServer folder.

Yeah, I did that.

I took another look this evening and found them after having Windows show hidden folders. Not sure why they were hidden but I’ve found them. I’ll zip the logs tomorrow evening when I get in from work and upload them.

The file has been uploaded.

Thank you again.

Adam

I couldn’t get the Arc app to work on my Pixel 8 Pro so I read on the community to download the APK which I did and, strangely, my Pixel finds the Nucleus One through the Arc app but still won’t through the Roon app.

I don’t know if this helps or makes things more complicated.

Hi @ADAM_LOWE

The usual causes for the remote app not finding the server are the remote being on a different subnet or the servers firewall blocking Roon processes. Can you check if either of these is going on?

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, been super busy with work.

Would you be able to tell me how to check please?

Hi @ADAM_LOWE,

Thank you for your post.

We can see the Pixel 8 disconnecting, both Roon control and RAAT, when the network refreshes in the background.

Let’s first verify that multicast announcements are forwarding correctly. In the Orbi settings, make sure that “Disable IGMP Proxying” is toggled off. I’d also check that any IGMP snooping and multicast forwarding settings are enabled.

If the DHCP lease time can be changed, try raising it by one or two intervals as available.

We’ve noticed that RoonServer on the Windows machine is connecting via WiFi rather than any ethernet interface. I recommend hardwiring this machine via ethernet, at least for troubleshooting.

Hi, sorry to jump on but I have a very similar set-up and problem. I trialled Roon with the server on my Windows PC, worked fine from PC and Pixel. Liked it so much I bought a Nucleus One as server which is hardwired to my Orbi router (instead of using PC for server). This is a mesh network - but everything is on the same subnet etc. Got to roughly the same situation as OP, where I could control the server from my PC but Android would just time out - even though I could navigate to the Roon server in a browser no problem. I tried assigning a static IP to the server, didn’t help.

Anyway, I unchecked ‘Disable IGMP Proxying’ on Orbi as suggested above (via browser, it’s not in the app) and now Roon player on my Pixel works.

Thanks for the help. Commenting in case someone else with the same set-up finds this thread.

Well - my Android connects more consistently, but it’s still far-from perfect. Hangs maybe 1-2 a day still, whereas my PC is perfect in connecting to my Nucleus ever time.

Sometimes when Roon on my phone can’t find the server it lets me enter the IP address and then finds it immediately. Is there a way to configure Roon on my phone so it knows where my Roon server lives (static) on the network?

Thank you, I’ll take a look now I’ve got a couple of days off work.

I appreciate the advice.
