Describe the issue

My android remote is stuck at "Choose Your Roon Server page". Server is running on a windows 11 machine, and I can play music easily on the Pro-Ject Streambox S2 Ultra from there. Server is connected to a switch and the switch is connected to the router which also offers wifi access to the phone

I had a Roon subscription last year, and all worked fine until one point in time. I could use the remote whithout issues. I don't recall what changed then but after one point, remote no longer worked no matter what.

I've reactivated my subscription now and installed Roon remote on a * new * phone, fresh install. I'm getting the same issue with the remote unable to connect to the server.

Of course both are in the same network, and I've tried manually specifying the server address. Please help, this is getting silly !

Describe your network setup

Windows 11 PC Server is connected to a switch and the switch is connected to the router which also offers wifi access to the phone. Devices are in the same network (192.168.1.x). Only windows 11 default antivirus solution is installed. Server is set to accept connections from remotes

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Here’s more info on proper firewall settings:

I’d temporarily disable your windows firewall and see if your issue persists. :+1:

Yeah sure, that makes sens. Turned off firewall for public, private, domain and still remote doesn’t work :frowning:

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Thanks for the update - no need to disable any network / router based firewalls! I was only referring to your windows firewall in this case. Do you have any additional third-party security software on the PC?

It would be good to rule out the switch as well - could you temporarily test out setting up a direct connection from your router to your PC running Roon Server?

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I’ve done accordingly so now the router’s lan port is connected to the Windows PC, and started roon core.
Of course the phone is using the wireless connection also from the router (disabled mobile data too on the phone)

Result: similar, the phone does not see the roon server, greeted by “Choose Your Roon Server” & won’t go further

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Thanks for giving that a try. Perhaps refreshing your RAATServer settings may help:

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Thanks for the hint, but i got to admit this is getting frustrating

I did create a new RAATServer folder as instructed, with no change, still won’t work

Update: After restart and stuff, now Roon Core won’t start anylonger

It’s getting stuck at “Waiting for your Roon Server”.

So i’ve unistalled Roon and re installed. Also I’ve restored to the RAATServer_old as it was known to work just a day ago. Also I’ve disabled firewall again.

Still getting “Waiting for your Roon Server” on the Core app, in windows

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

I’m sorry to hear your issues continue. It doesn’t look like our servers are able to connect to your Windows device running Roon Server, could you please reproduce the issue and use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Perhaps a complete fresh instance of Roon may be helpful:

As a next step, let’s fully remove Roon from the windows and do a fresh install - do you have a recently saved backup?

After you uninstalled Roon, navigate to C:\Users\[*Your username*]\AppData\Local and delete all Roon folders:

RAATServer
Roon
RoonGoer
RoonServer

After a fresh install (download here), restore your recently saved backup to load your prior library settings.

Hi again!,

So i’ve uploaded the logs prior to doing anything new now, so it should already have captured the stuck in Waiting For Roon Server I was getting at startup lately. Tell me if this is insufficient.

The bit about Roon Server conecting by default to your servers sounds a bit troubling to me. I hope it’s just the license/account check?

Next I went on to do the fresh install; indeed once removing the settings and extra stuff i’m able to start the Core App/ Server on my PC. Next I loaded last backup, changed to dark team, roon asked for restart, restarted (did get like 10 seconds delay before the red connection light went green). Stopped roon and started again, I’m again greeted now with Waiting For Roon Server.

So that ended badly.

Performed the steps again, remove, load another backup, the one before the latest, dark theme, restart, all okay. So stopped Roon, restarted the PC, and now again seeing “Waiting For Roon Server”. Seems Roon Core only works once or twice per install now :frowning:

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Sorry for any confusion here, could you send over a set of Roon Server logs specifically?

This is a manual request made by the Technical Support team to enable a one time diagnostic report including Roon Server logs.

This pattern is typically related to some form of firewall or antivirus software blocking connection, which I know you’ve tested in the past.

Let me know when the Roon Server logs are uploaded and our team will take a closer look. :+1:

Thanks for answer.

I’ve sent: RoonServer logs & RAAT logs (probably useless)

Also I’ve done another reinstall, after which I’ve only started Roon with both firewall and antivirus disabled (again, those are the default av/fw for Windows 11, no third party software).
Behaviour is the same, after loading the backup it works once. But the next time it is “Waiting for your Roon Server”

I’ve attached the RoonServer logs for this case too

Edit: I’ve noted that when launching Roon and the windows program displaying “Waiting for your Roon Server” , actually no new RoonServer logs are generated at all (waiting is thus genuine), only Roon Logs. So please be aware of that.

Looking in the Roon_log myself, i guess the error could be about the looping of LOST BROKER / FOUND BROKER, like so:

06/19 00:53:18 Trace: [remoting/remotebrokerv2] [CHRONITON] [InitConnection id=0ce1 CHRONITON@127.0.0.1:9332] Connected

Okay so I fixed Roon core so that it no longer shows “Waiting for your Roon Server” and it works again.

It seems that after reinstallation, if i allow the stupid little tray thinggie to start roon server at startup, i get no more problems. Annoying, i don’t like autostarting things, but it now reliably starts

I’ve sent a new batch of roon server logs for this reinstall. Note that the latest log file in there is Roon core log with firewall disabled. Also the remote attempts to connect (unsucessfully, same issue as the initial one reported here, ip of remote is 192.168.1.4) and indeed it gets showed there in the logs

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

You can always right-click the Roon app icon “show package contents” and open/start Roon Server that way, if you do not want Roon Server to boot at startup.

Outside of that, I unfortunately don’t have any next steps for you to try. We have a ticket in with our dev team for further review, I hope to have more information to share with you soon.

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Thanks for the report. As a next step, could you please send over a set of Roon logs from the affected android remote?

Connect your PC to Android phone and install ADB (instructions are here (all platforms)). Then:

  1. Type adb shell in terminal
  2. Type logcat v (ref: Logcat 명령줄 도구  |  Android Studio  |  Android Developers)
  3. Reproduce the problem and let terminal print logs for 3-5 more seconds
  4. Select output from the moment you started the reproduction of the bug till the very end
  5. Upload the log here and let us know once you have done so:

Does Arc work on the Android device? And lastly, do you by chance have a device that isn’t the windows 11 or your android that you can attempt to connect?

Thanks!

Hello, I’ve added log files as requested

Installed Roon Arc, it sees my server but says it’s only available on the network. When connecting, it just never succeds, and keeps spinning the circle. I will try to have look on fixing arc connectivity soon (reports issue in the Core App as well)

As i said, i do have another Android phone which used to be able to connect but then started behaving like the current phone. With the current phone, bought it new, and Roon Remote never worked

I do have another Windows 11 laptop which i can try stuff with. I’ve installed Roon there, and getting the same, that it is “looking for Roon Server” forever.

Hi @Cristian_Martin,

Thanks for the report - our team will take a closer look at the logs you’ve sent over.

In the meantime, I wanted to confirm: you’re still able to access Roon via the same windows 11 machine running Roon Server, correct?

Do you have any VPNs within your system?

Can you test out bypassing the switch temporarily? I’m seeing frequent network disconnections happening from your Roon Server machine, which doesn’t necessarily explain the lack of connection from your remote devices, but would be good to button up stability overall.

Hello again benjamin,

been a little away from home and all, sorry for the late reply

Yes, I’m still able to access Roon, but only on the machine where the roon server is running.

I am using a few vpns indeed for work and other reasons, but they are all offf when i want to run Roon. Are you interested in morre detalils here?

“Can you test out bypassing the switch temporarily?”
Okay, I’ve connected again the windows 11 PC directly to the router
Stopped antivirus and switch on the PC.
Launched first the Android remote, zipped a batch of log files.
Launched next the remote from another Windows laptop i have (mentioned before), zipped some more logs
(result is that it fails to connect again in both cases)

I’m sending them to the same link ( https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/8i5239cc05950ac07456889838d9319545a82/external ) okay?

Thanks for bearing with us through this process.

No if you aren’t using the VPNs at the same time as Roon then they aren’t an issue.

We are still seeing the network errors in your logs so we can disregard the switch as being part of the problem.

Can you make sure that IGMP snooping is on in your network settings?
Also can you make sure that Windows has your network set as a private network?

I don’t know where to find IGMP settings or to test them. Searched a bit on the net but nothing clear emerged to me.
Also in the router settings I did not find something like that

Oh yes network is “private”
