Android Tablet for Display

I am thinking of using a cheap unbranded 7 inch tablet from Aliexpress to act only as a “what’s playing” display on my hifi bench. Just want to have an always on, at a glance display. The cheaper tablets run Android 7, generally have 1Gb ram (only 500Mb available for user) and a slower processor. Is there a minimum spec. ROON needs for this simple display purpose? (I’m aware of Pi+7 inch screen+case+power supply possibilities but a tablet is cheaper.)

One thing to keep in mind is that Roon Remote app requires OpenGL 3 support. Many of those super-cheap tablets will not meet that requirement.

I use an Amazon Fire HD8 with ‘Show Mode’ dock as a display. It runs Roon remote, so I can also control Roon from it if I want, but I mainly use it as an always-on display.

@Dan_Brown What model year is that do you know? Different model years have different capabilities.

It’s an 8th Generation. I bought it in May 2019
