I’ve hunted around for a solution, as one of my roon cores is on a Late-2012 mac mini. I’m sure many others have cores on similar equipment. (Runs flawlessly!) And as you know, these older macs will not update to the OS that roon requires for this 2026 update.
I’ve seen solutions that require the “OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP)” to install modern MacOS versions on unsupported machines. I’ve looked through the instructions and it’s a bit daunting, as it requires creating bootable installers, and installing it on the computer’s EFI partition, etc…
Seems like something i could easily and royally screw up, and I’m fairly savvy. (Or used to be, anyway!)
Has anyone done this, and might have a foolproof How-To? (Or could point to the best, clearest video/tutorial on doing this?)
I don’t have an opinion on whether or not you should do this. If you do, I recommend you have a backup plan in place and be prepared for the possibility that you convert your Mini into a brick. In other words, back it up (or copy data off of it) and prepare for the possibility that you are going to be patting the little guy on the head and thanking him for his many years of service.
I know many people who have done this and things like it. I’ve certainly done my share For these things, YouTube is your friend. Find a walkthrough and have it running on some other device like a laptop or an iPad. Pause it when you need to, go backwards when necessary. Change the playback speed if that helps.
I took a quick peek at YouTube to see what’s available and this video stood out. You do need a USB thumb drive with nothing on it and you do have to boot into EFI, but that’s just a reboot with the option key down at the right moment.
So here you and let us know and, like I said, I’m not recommending this and I’m not telling you it’s going to work
terzinator I’m faced with the same situation and I flinched at the prospect of potentially bricking my late 2013 iMac which works fine for everything but Roon. I opted to order a Nucleus One, currently awaiting fulfillment (aren’t we all?).
Reading through the instructions I note that they state that it is “mandatory” that both devices be fully updated to the latest version of Roon. This may well be impossible on the iMac. Can someone reassure me that this will not prevent the migration to the Nucleus.
Any other helpful tips would be appreciated. Nothing is too obvious.
If you just want to get Roon running on a late 2012 Mac mini, a Linux distribution is an option. I ran Roon with a network player using Ubuntu Server for years. The Mac mini is still running Ubuntu, though it’s now the desktop version. Roon runs on it too, but I don’t use it. There are tutorials online, and the installation was relatively straightforward.
True, but installing Linux and installing a newer macOS with OpenCore Patcher are the same steps essentially. Not super hard like I said above, but if one is scared of OCP, then Linux is not the solution.
If you don’t want to touch macos for whatever reason the next best option would be docker. To revert delete it or restore your backup. Performance is the question.
