And I haven’t even finished moving my Apple Music Library over to TIDAL yet. Time to put that project on hold, I guess.

Used MOG- really liked it- after it was acquired by Beats, not so much…
Under Beats ownership the service devolved rather than evolved. Stopped using Beats.
Then Apple purchased, and Beats certainly didn’t get better.
Given history, if acquired by Apple, I fear the same would happen to Tidal- perhaps even to the
point where it would not stream lossless and/or even support ROON.
I truly hope than ROON has a contingency plan (or several of them). Maybe a coalition of
ROON and equipment manufacturers that support ROON or are “ROON Ready” can exert
influence on Apple (please tell me I’m not delusional…).
to my understanding MQA is not dependent on container type until it’s pcm
By my calculations if every Roon user put in about US$4000 we could give Jay Z his money back and gift Tidal to the Roon guys
USD coming home to roost
God knows what we’d see featured on the front page then
Some real music perhaps ?
Agree - a huge concern…
Time for Roon to get into serious negotiations with Qobuz. For me, Roon loses significant value without high quality streaming service integration. This risk is one of the primary reasons I haven’t invested in lifetime.
Interesting posts by Brian in this thread as to what is happening under the hood of the Roon/Tidal integration, what is involved in applying it to other services and some general comments about discussions with other services.
I have to say that hearing this makes me glad I haven’t yet purchased a Roon lifetime subscription. Having Tidal and my own library available in the same interface is one of the primary reasons I purchased a subscription. I have no faith or expectation that if this happens Apple will have any interest in lossless streaming. In the absence of that I no longer have a compelling reason to use Roon. Well, hopefully it’s just smoke and nothing awful will happen.
All the indications point to Jay Z selling Tidal to someone. I never thought he would be in this for the long term.
Roon really needs to think hard about offering other streaming services.
I would love Roon even without Tidal. Tidal is the super-sweet icing on the cake that makes my subscription purchase a no-brainer. At home it is replacing all of my compressed AAC and Apple Music files.
My mobile audio life (Tidal, Korg iAudioGate) is still mostly separate from Roon. If forced, I could use Spotify, Apple Music, or another service to feed my head on the road. And with the Soundiiz web site, I can move playlists pretty easily from one to the other (again, if forced).
I hope you can find some compelling reasons to use Roon even if Tidal integration goes away; reasons that will still let you feel good about your subscription purchase.
Cheers,
Jeff
Which ones? Spotify is apparently not interested in lossless. Qobuz is not available as yet to US subscribers. Deezer?
I don’t know, Jeff. I really like Roon, both the interface and the community. But without access to a library other than my own it just doesn’t, at least for me, offer the same value. Perhaps if the price were adjusted? I want Roon to succeed and I want to be a part of that. We’ll see.
I agree.
Without access to a streaming service, the value of Roon significantly decreases. The integration is what makes it special.
That would be a refreshing change. It’s what I missed when I went from Spotify to Tidal.
And Apple will pay the artists instead of the big companies (read banks etc)
The radio feature which mixes your library tracks with Tidal tracks is what convinced me to buy a lifetime sub . Now I believe it’s likely that Apple will buy Tidal . Who knows what happens with the lossless service .
I hope this is a wake up call to Roon
to start looking at Qobuz, Deezer Elite and maybe Spotify if they offer a lossless plan , which I feel becomes more likely now that Apple probably buys Tidal .
Not a fan of subscription-based music streaming at all and hope this doesn’t torpedo Roon’s value proposition to people who care about the Roon/Tidal connection. Apple has seriously lost its way for any type of music UI/UX for all their devices, let alone any kind of audiophile support. I can hardly believe the current iOS music app was authored by Apple. It has so much wrong with it. Even support for their own iOS music remote is sadly pathetic. I noticed the on the latest WWDC keynote that the new Apple iOS music app is trying desperately to make up for their terrible mistakes in the past. Will Apple avoid becoming the next Microsoft? Time will tell. I bought a Roon lifetime subscription about a month ago. It’s the best expression of the Apple ethos. Hope I don’t regret it. In the meantime Apple needs to watch Roon and take some serious notes.
