ARC (Android Auto) fails to restart after brief car stops [Investigating]

Describe the issue

The issue I am having is as follows:

When I first get in the car (after not driving for an extended time, say overnight) android auto starts up, ARC starts up and everything is great

I drive for a while and stop, turn off the car (say to pump gas at a gas station) for a short period of time.

When I get back into the car and start it up, Android Auto starts up fine, but ARC does nothing. In order to get ARC to "recover" so to speak, I have to go into apps on the phone and "force stop" the ARC app. At this point in time, ARC restarts and everything is fine again...until I turn off the car for a short period and get back in.

This instability is recent - I don't recall if it started with the last update, but if not that one, the one before. For a long time ARC had been quite solid, until recently.

I'm running stock Android 14 on Pixel 7a
Android Auto 12.4.642824-release
ARC 1.0.55

Describe your network setup

Ting Gigabit
fiber router (I don't know manufacturer/model)
WAN/LAN router (Cisco RV-180)
Switch (Cisco 3560G)

@support, I’m seeing this, too. A recent regression. I also note that the now playing screen (split display) doesn’t display Roon, and is replaced by another app, e.g., Bandcamp what’s new. Force stop is the only solution.

Using stock Android 14 on Pixel 7.

I have the same problem with a Pixel 6A.

@connor, you can pull my logs from around 09:15 BST today. It took a couple of forced stops to get things running again.

@connor you can also pull my logs from ~12:30pm EDT 8/12/2024 - this was the most recent occurrance for me.

A single forced stop worked for me in this case.

I have experienced the same issue with Android Auto on my Samsung Galaxy S 23. I haven’t tried the force stop. Arc will eventually display on my car screen and playback a selection but will not show it playing. I can hear but not advance tracks or pause. Etc.

Hi Jeff,

Support threads are for each individual user’s issue. Even if you have the same issue, please create your own support thread click on Support and then use the Get Help button.

I have experienced similar recently with android auto and samsung S23 on usb cable.
After car restart, the split screen shows YTMusic list instead of arc.

I find one thing that helps is pulling the USB cable from the phone when engine is off and then re-plugging after starting car. My car doesn’t support wireless android auto so can’t comment on that setup…

Sometimes the split screen then shows the “tap to start arc” even though arc is playing. Tapping the split section does nothing, but tapping the arc icon flips it over to the now playing screen.

All of these shenanigans started about 1 month ago.

Hi everyone,

The team is investigating this behavior and will post updates as available. Thank you again for submitting timestamps. We should have more information soon.
