ARC app crashing on iPhone 15 Pro Max due to library size (ref#YFFI88) [Ticket in]

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Can’t reach my Server, remotes or ARC

Can’t connect to my Server, remotes or ARC

· Other ARC issues

Tell us what's going on

· I am using an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app works temporarily, but it eventually starts crashing again after just a few uses. Could you please investigate this issue? It is becoming a total dealbreaker. Roon is a great platform, but remote access is currently impossible. I am seriously considering moving away from Roon for this very reason.
I have extensively researched this topic and am fully aware of the root cause: the massive object graph sync required for large libraries triggers iOS memory limitations, causing the OS to kill the app. Please spare me the generic troubleshooting scripts—the diagnosis is clear, what we need is a permanent fix.

Hello @laurent_guerin,

Thank you for the detailed report. We don’t need to troubleshoot anything here. There is a known issue with ARC on iOS crashing with large libraries, and we have an active ticket open with our development team for this. No troubleshooting steps are needed on your end.

We have added your case to the tracking thread to help raise its priority. Please follow our Roon Software Discussion > Software Release Notes for updates regarding this issue.

Hi @laurent_guerin,

During our internal testing, ARC will only perform reliably up to one hundred thousand tracks in its current implementation. You’ll find that above that threshold, initial sync often fails or the app will generally be slow to respond and perform sluggishly. A portion of Roon users with libraries that size and larger have been asking the team to investigate possibilities to expand that upper limit (at least for intial sync), and these efforts are nearing fruition.

This is a question of object count rather tha storage space; ARC has to maintain parity with your Roon Server in order to prevent corruption and keep data updated. Above about 100,000 tracks, the phone operating system itself imposes limits on data transfer scale for ARC.

The team has a specific ticket in the pipeline to prevent initial sync from failing with large databases regardless of object count; this would limit large-library symptoms to sluggish performance at worst moving forward. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of these efforts as they move through the pipeline, but we needed to be candid about expectations for the current implementation.
