ARC goes silent two miles from home while in car (ref#601M9V)

Network Setup

· My only router was provided by my ISP

ARC Status

· ARC is *Ready*

Describe the issue

When using ARC in the car, music lasts until maybe two miles from home, then goes silent. No resuscitation possible.

Describe your network setup

Router is a Spectrum-provided Sercomm SAX1V1R; Roon is on a NUC717BNH; Network is fully wired

Good day @John_V !

We can see that you are using Early Access version of Roon at this moment which means it might bring some instability issues.

For your situation we’d recommend you to switch to the production version (

) and switch your router back to IPv4 and check if it is working.

Other than that you may try to stick to VPN solution like this:

Let us know please whether anything of above works for you.

Regards.

This is an ongoing issue. You can search around the forums. (Example: Inconsistent ARC Connectivity Through Network Changes (ref#HVO5HW)). I’ve liaised with the ARC developers on the side about it, and there have been many improvements but no perfect fix yet.

The main underlying constraint is that, due to Roon’s relationships with streaming services, they cannot queue up more than one extra track in advance, including from your local collection. So when you lose network connectivity (particularly when switching from your home Wi-Fi to cellular), and it can’t load that next track, you will see this failure and it doesn’t pick up very well after that.

Again, it’s a lot better than it used to be, but it still needs some more work.

Also, I suppose I should mention that the interim solution right now is just to force quit the app then restart it.

Hi Alex, thanks for your reply. I don’t think my ISP’s router app has the option to switch IP naming protocols; haven’t found it anyway. And I’m curious: what led you to believe I was using v6? (I did not set it that way intentionally.)

I will also transition to the production version. I’m gonna assume I need to do that with all ARC AND Roon installations unless you advise otherwise.

Just FYI, I used to use ARC from Birmingham AL to Chicago IL (about 10-12 hours) without a hitch. Now, I enjoy it for about 5 minutes before it drops out, 100 percent of the time. Not a good trend line.

I guess my flawless long-lived receptions of Podcasts and Qobuz tunes are not comparable to ARC. Perhaps the VPN stuff is the way to go. Thanks for your responses, and I’ll let you know of my progress or lack thereof. Cheers!

Hi @John_V

Could you describe the behavior in more detail? Is this behavior a one-time occurrence after you leave your house, meaning you can start playback again, or does it happen several times when you’re driving around town for example and experience these audio interruptions?

Thanks for your interest Vadim. The ARC drop-off behavior occurs every time I try to use ARC. My usual sequence is to start my car (2013 Toyota Avalon), select Media, start ARC and wait a short bit for a connection, then begin playing, all before I leave the carport. Then, about a mile from home, the music stops and will not restart. I once thought it happened because of a cellular deadspot near my house. However, dropouts occur regardless of route taken.

After reflecting upon another user’s comments, I THINK it tends to stop at the end of a song or movement. I will try to confirm that later.

At no time have I been able to restart music in the car. Since I’m moving, about the only maneuver I can safely make is a reboot of ARC, and one time I tried a reboot of the iPhone. Neither move worked.

I have now shifted to the ARC production versionas suggested. Another suggestion was reverting from IPv6 to IPv4. My router kit (MySpectrum app and a Sercom router) doesn’t have an option to make such a shift. The last suggest was to install a VPN. I’m attempting to install and use Tailscale tomorrow and will have a long road trip tomorrow to see if any of these changes improve things. Will report back.

Hello @John_V,

At the moment, I suspect that the issue occurs when the connection type changes from WiFi to cellular data. In this case, the currently playing song finishes successfully, but the next track, which should start over the cellular connection, fails to play.

I will ask our QA team to try to replicate this behavior and investigate further.

Update: after changing to the production version on the server and reinstalling ARC, I am happy, or at least happier, to say that my music coverage now extends to well beyond the previous short limit. I will be testing on a 120-mile journey this afternoon.

Many thanks for the support. BTW: I did not try installing the VPN; my eyes glazed over at the prospect.

Hello @John_V

Please keep us posted on your findings. It may be that we have an issue in the EA build, and it would be great if we could isolate and fix it before it goes to production.

Hello @John_V,

I have looked into the situation you described and can confirm that our QA team also observed the same problem on the EA build with ROCK devices. This issue has already been reported and fixed by the R&D team, so we can expect the fix to be included in the next EA build.
