Arc: selecting large playlist causes crash [Ticket In]

Hi

Here I am describing 2 major issues with Arc CarPlay. Please note that I am only seeing these when using CarPlay. These may have been mentioned elsewhere but because both issues had been around for very long time (possibly since Arch has launched) I want to reiterate them here.

ISSUE 1: After launching arc CarPlay, the UI will refresh 3-4 times with 4-5 sec between refreshes, If I am doing anything on the GUI at this time refresh will always bring me back to the main page. VERY annoying

ISSUE 2: When selecting a playlist (fixed or smart) with more than N tracks,Arc will crash. N used to be somewhere between 2000 and 3000 in my experience. But with the recent update it is now between 1000 and 2000. I have number of playlists with thousands of tracks and I cannot play any of them on CarPlay. Arc simply crashes every single time.

Again these issues have been persistent release after release and I am hoping you can prioritize them for one of the upcoming releases

Thanks

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann,

Thank you for the report.

For Issue #1, we’ll need to know the make/model or OEM of the CarPlay head unit.

For Issue #2, are you connecting to CarPlay via Bluetooth or a USB-C/Lightning cable?

Are there any errors presented when you attempt to play a large playlist and experience a crash?

Logs indicate failures with the audio engine associated with a “Play Now” action on a large playlist. However, there’s no crash logged within the framework, so the more detail you can provide with a visual description of the symptom, the better.

Thank you!

Hi

I am not exactly sure what do you mean by model of the head unit. I use the app in 2 cars. Mazda cx-5 and VW Tiguan. Both have built in CarPlay.

In both cases I can do wired (lightning cable) or wireless (VW has built in wireless, with Mazda I use a CarPlay wireless adapter ) and both issues are reproducible with both cars both wired and wireless. Also there is no error message when the crash occurs. The CarPlay display simply goes back to the default with all the apps. Hope this helps. Im happy to provide more details if required

Thanks

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann ,

Thanks for the details. Regarding issue #1: Can you please record a short video next time you notice this behavior and upload it to the below link?

As for issue #2, please let us know the exact local time + date when you next notice this crash (or a few crashes if you can). This will help us identify any patterns in the error logging for your account. Thanks!

Hi. Will do. thanks

Great, we’ll be on the look out for that information!

Hi.

ISSUE #2:

Latest crash today: Nov 7, 12:58:57 PM EST
BTW these crashes of lengthy playlist are 100% reproducible

I will be uploading the video for Issue 1 shortly

thanks again

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann,
Thanks for getting that timestamp for us. We were able to find the crash in your logs. We will bring this report to the developers and let you know when we know more.

I uploaded a video where you can see the refresh I talkjed about in Issue #1. Hope that helps

Thanks for uploading the video. I will add it to our ticket. When we have some next steps for you we will let you know.

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann,
Our development team reviewed your case today. We were unfortunately unable to reproduce this in-house so they had a number of questions that they hope will help them narrow down the cause.

  1. Is ARC crashing on the head unit or the phone? It looked like the head unit from what you have posted but we want to confirm that.
  2. Do you select the playlist from your phone or from the head unit?
  3. Has this ever happened when ARC isn’t connected to CarPlay?

Once you answer those questions for us we will be able to investigate further.

Hi. This sound like my Issue #2.

  1. It is crashing on the head unit
  2. I select the playlist from head unit
  3. In ARC player - when not connected to CarPlay - the playlist loads and it loads instantaneously.

And this crash happens every single time for playlist where the number of tracks is > ~1,500 (not sure of the exact number, but e.g. I have one with 1,200 track and it loads every time, but others that have more than 2,000 all crash)

Thanks

Emil

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann ,

Thanks for the update. We are checking with the team regarding your ARC logging and we will let you know once we have further details to share. Thank you in advance for your patience!

Hi

A while ago I created this post with two very annoying issues with Arc

None of the releases so far had the fix. That includes the release from today. Wondering if you have a timeline for it?

Thx

Hi. Any update on this? Thx

Hi @Emil_Zimmermann,

There’s a ticket in with the team concerning the playlist-related crash. We’ll post updates as this fix progresses through the pipeline to an Early Access release for testing.

UI-related issues in the Carplay module itself are specific to the model of head-unit. You indicated previously that these were OEM units from a Mazda CX-5 and VW Tiguan. The team will investigate this issue, but if you can provide a precise timestamp of what you’re experiencing, it will help expedite our investigation.

On Feb 5, 6:09:48 (±10s) PM EST I had a crash caused by a playlist with few thousand tracks

Feb 6, 8:14:50 AM PST (±5 sec) I had at least two subsequent screen refreshes no more than few seconds apart
