ARCAM rPLAY device not starting music playback in Roon (ref#13I3AW)

What is the issue with your audio zone(s)?

· One audio zone missing while others appear as expected

Restart Affected Device

· No, the issue is still the same even after a restart

Restart Roon Server

· No, the issue is still the same even after a restart

Restart Network

· No, the issue is still the same even after a restart

What is the operating system of the affected device?

· Linux (other)

Describe the issue

I am using an ARCAM rPLAY which appears as an AirPlay device on my network. In Roon I can see the device as well (in the Audio list).

However when I try to play music in Roon through it, the music never starts.

Describe your network setup

I'm using a Netgear D6200 router after an NBN box. Roon server (on Synology NAS) is cable-wired to the Netgear, Mac mini with Roon client (used as its own audio endpoint as well) is cable wired too. ARCAM rPLAY is cable-wired. iPad and iPhone WIreless connected to Netgear.

I’m adding a screenshot of the Mac Roon client:

It shows both the rPlay appearing in the Audio List and the music is not playing through the device despite being the selected zone.

Hey @hallo_leo,

Thanks for writing in! Could you please reproduce the issue, share the track name and then please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Thanks! I just have uploaded the logs under my username hallo_leo. Filename is logs_hallo_leo_20250927.zip.

Hope this helps!

Hey @hallo_leo,

Thanks for sending those logs over! We were able to see the following error occur when attempting playback:

Warn: [airplay/clientV2] [192.168.0.19] Got exception connecting to device at 192.168.0.10,43754: System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (111): Connection refused
  1. Have you tested out the airplay compatibility toggle within device settings yet? If not, enable your airplay zone, then access device settings and toggle the compatibility mode and see if playback starts properly. 👍
  2. It may be worth double-checking the firewall settings or third party security software that may be blocking the handshake here.
Thank you! 🙏

Thanks heaps for looking at the logs! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You say:

You mean the device settings of the ARCAM device in Roon (in the “Audio” settings panel)?

I found the switch in Roon (in the “Audio” settings panel) and I toggled it:

Unfortunately it does not better things: Playback still doesn’t start. Can I try something else in Roon?

The ARCAM streamer connects via wire to the router, a Netgear D6200. The RoonServer also connects to the same router via wired connection. The firewall on the the D6200 has no extra rules.

Also, I can access the ARCAM streamer as an AirPlay device from my iOS devices:

And I can play through it too (even in Roon Arc!). This indicates that the firewall works fine. So I guess, the issues are very much Roon Audio Zones-related. How can I solve them?

Many thanks for your continuous help in advance.

Hi @hallo_leo,

And if you temporarily disable the macOS firewall, does the same issue occur?

Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Ok, I have disable the macOS firewall, then restarted the Roon Server and restarted the ARCAM streamer. Finally I tried to play the song “I Like It Like That” by Chris Kenner / Allen Toussaint. - but it still did not start play back.

So, I stopped the RoonServer, zipped up the logs and uploaded them as logs_hallo_leo_20251002.zip to your upload area.

I am curious what you find!

Thank you for giving that a try @hallo_leo - we were able to review the errors that occured during attempted playback.

As a next step in testing, could you try using the rPLAY over ethernet as a network device, rather than airplay?

Happy to try this. But what do I have to do for this? The rPlay is already connected via Ethernet (not via WiFi).

Hi @hallo_leo,

You have my apologies - I got my wires crossed when determining the proper next steps for your specific device. Please ignore my prior response!

From a recent Roon Server diagnostic report, we can see the following failure in connection attempts:

Got exception connecting to device at 192.168.0.10,38385: System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (111): Connection refused

We’re also seeing a RTSP timeout failures - RTSP is the protocol AirPlay uses to control playback:

IOException in RTSP request: Unable to read data from the transport connection: Connection timed out.

This means that after the initial handshake, the control channel became unresponsive and the device stopped replying.

A few next troubleshooting steps to attempt:

  1. Restart both devices: Power-cycle the AirPlay device (rPlay-Tuby) and your server
  2. Check IP consistency: Ensure both devices are on the same subnet (192.168.0.x) and no IP conflicts exist.
  3. Use a wired connection (if possible): AirPlay over Ethernet is far more stable than Wi-Fi.
  4. Check multicast support: Ensure your router allows multicast and mDNS (Bonjour) between devices.
    • Disable “AP/client isolation” if enabled.
  5. Update firmware: the AirPlay receiver firmware are up to date.
  6. Try a static IP: Assign the AirPlay device a fixed IP (192.168.0.10) to avoid DHCP reassignments.
Let me know if any of the above help - thank you! 🙌

Thanks @benjamin

I worked through your list:

Done. Even done again after multicast and fixed IP changes. (See below.)

Yep, all devices (rPlay, Roon Server and Mac) are on the 192.168.0.x subnet.

Ditto, all three devices (rPlay, Roon Server and Mac) are wired in via Ethernet (and use that as their connection - I checked in the router’s device table)

This one is tricky: The only thing I found in the manual of my Netgear D6200 mentioning multicast, is the RIP version. Here a screenshot of the page showing this setting in its disabled default:

The manual says that setting it to RIP_2m enables multicast. So i switched it on:

But then many of my devices didn’t connect correctly anymore, including rPlay-tuby.

So I reverted the seeting. Do you think I need to enabke RIP_VERSION and maybe change another setting as well?

“AP/client isolation” is disabled.

I have updated the rPlay a few weeks ago when I sat it up in the new location.

Yep, rPlay and Roon Server are on fixed IP addresses.

Still, the Roon Server sees the rPlay AirPlay device and I can switch the zone to it, but Roon never plays from this device.

Do you have another idea how to fix this? Or is it worth it to send you new logs?

Hi @hallo_leo,

Thanks for giving all of that a try!

RIP_2M enables RIP version 2 in multicast mode, which is only for router-to-router communication.

That does not enable or disable general multicast forwarding or multicast routing for other types of traffic like mDNS, or RAOP/Chromecast multicast groups.

In fact, enabling RIP_2M can interfere with normal device discovery and routing, especially on home routers that aren’t set up to handle multicast routing tables, which matches what you saw (devices dropping off).

What Roon and rPlay require is proper multicast forwarding within the LAN, sometimes called:

  • IGMP Proxying
  • IGMP Snooping
  • Multicast Filtering or Multicast Pass-through
These are typically found under Advanced → WAN → Internet → IGMP or LAN Setup sections, depending on firmware. Look for settings like:
  • Enable IGMP Proxying” (on)
  • Enable IGMP Snooping” (on)
  • Disable Multicast Filtering” (off)
  • Enable Multicast Streams” (on)
Or is it worth it to send you new logs?
This would be helpful with the above changes you’ve made!

Another area to test in terms of airplay playback would be to add the rPLAY to your list of devices in your Apple Home app. Here’s how to do this:

Let me know if this helps, and when you’ve uploaded server logs. Thank you!

@benjamin Thanks for all the details!

I could not find anything like this in the web config (or in the manual) of the NEtgear D6200 router.

I uploaded through your uplaoder an archive with router screenshots. They show what options I see. I don’t think there is anything related to this, but maybe I just don’t get it… Would you mind having a glance at the screenshots whether I overlook something?

I will read through this link and report back.

I don’t have this ARCAM device but I do have an SA30 and seem to remember a number of user’s having to do a Net Reset on their device’s to get certain features to work after updates or after the ARCAM streaming features stopped working.

As they are of a similar age, maybe you can go through the menu’s and see if you can find that and see if it helps

Hey @hallo_leo,

Thanks for sharing the screenshots! We suspect your deduction is correct there. Are you able to upload a set of Roon Server logs as well, after you’ve reproduced the issue?

We’d also be curious to see if the steps @Michael_Harris has listed above may be helpful as well - let us know if you’re able to run through those as well.

We’ll be monitoring for your reply, thank you! :folded_hands:

Thanks for chiming in @Michael_Harris.

I don’t understand fully what you mean with Net Reset. Rebooting the Streamer?

Hi @benjamin
I have tried adding the rPlay to HomeKit - no betterment. :frowning:

Will do so soon…

On my SA30 there are a set of menu options available through the remote and the control buttons on the amplifier. One of them takes you to an option called net reset which disables, renews and activates all the network settings like Roon, Airplay and Chromecast

Hopefully this makes more sense now
