Audio devices missing after Roon Server update (ref#2YEHK8)

What best describes your playback issue?

· My DAC, streamer, or speaker doesn't appear as a Zone in Roon

What type of Zone is affected by this problem?

· *All of my Zones* are affected.

Is your device connected directly to the Roon Server via cable or over the network, or is it chained through another device (such as a streamer, Roon Bridge, or Roon Remote)?

· Connected directly to my RoonServer machine

Does the device show up at all in Roon Settings -> Audio?

· No, it does not show up there

Does the device play audio from another source when using the same connection?

· The device has no problems with another audio source

Have you checked that Roon is whitelisted in any firewalls?

· I've checked the firewall and the issue remains

Since you are using a network connection to the device, please ensure that your RoonServer is on the same subnet as the device

· My devices are on a single subnet but is not visible to Roon

Do you have a complex network setup?

· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*

Try to disable any additional networking interfaces on your RoonServer machine.

· Disabling network interfaces had no change in behavior

Check to make sure RoonReady mode is selected on the device.

· I've checked this and the issue remains

If the device has multiple output options, do the other options work as expected?

· Only one output type is affected while the other output type works as expected

Is the device using the latest firmware as per the manufacturer?

· Firmware is up-to-date but the issue remains

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?

· I haven't played anything since this happened about 20 minutes ago

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Eversolo DMP-A6 and Wiim Pro Plus, both connected via wifi. Everything working perfectly until the Roon software update today

Describe the issue

Immediately after allowing my Roon Server to receive an update, all my audio devices / zones have disappeared from the Roon software. I cannot see anyway to restore them.

Describe your network setup

FRITZ!Box 7530 AX

Do you happen to be running Roon on a Mac?

Have you checked macOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network to make sure Roon has rights to talk to the local network?

Have you tried restarting Roon?

I can see this being suggested on similar support tickets.

Roon has local network access. Restarting Roon has no effect.

In case it is not immediately apparent from the ticket above, everything was fine until the Roon software update.

I am - I have already posted a reply to say I have checked some of the things being suggested in other similar threads, but it seems I need approval to reply to my own ticket…

Have you tried disabling Roon’s network access, then re-enabling it (in macOS Settings)?

This is due to forum restrictions that is applied to all New Users … your account’s Trust Level is automatically maintained and is increased (or decreased) based on your activity on the forum.

I too recommend this, there’s something “odd” happening with MacOS and network security, which often manifest on application installation (which happens during application updates).

It seams that MacOS is indicated application access to the network, but traffic is being blocked.
Toggling the setting (off/on), tends to “kick” it back into life.

Have you tried disabling Roon’s network access, then re-enabling it (in macOS Settings)?

Yes

This sounds like a terrific idea but as a new user I was hoping for product support from the company, not to join a forum.

Not what you want to hear I know, but product support from Roon is only available via the forum.
There is a benefit in that seasoned Roon users are often able to identify a solution ahead of your ticket reaching the top of Roon’s Support queue.

Roon Support will be along, but it does take a while several hours (small team, lot’s of users), also they don’t work weekends or holidays.

PS Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m a moderator on here, but I don’t work for Roon I’m user like you.

@herewego

Try rebooting your router and any network gear then your Roon server and then your endpoints.

Thanks for explaining. I am not expecting an instant response from Roon by any means, but I do think it’s a little strange that a support request is converted to a forum message which I’m then unable to reply to.

I have been using Roon for less than a week, and up to this afternoon my impression was favourable. However I’m a little disappointed that my completely vanilla set up has run into problems so quickly. Let’s see if it can get fixed.

Hi @herewego,

Thank you for your post.

Diagnostics indicate that RAATServer experienced an unmanaged crash on this Mac Mini on 4/16 at approximately 15:01 local time.

This would have severed visibility to any device managed locally on this Mac Mini, including the System Output (which relies on the loopback ethernet interface to communicate with coreaudio.

We see RAATServer has since successfully started up and initiated a discovery cycle through the available network interface used by RoonServer. Most commonly, this would indicate that connectivity is restored. If that’s not the case, please share a screenshot of the Audio Settings page in Roon and a basic overview of any VPNs or network security features not listed in your description.

Some workarounds if this occurs again:

You can shut down RAATServer in the Activity Monitor and then close/reopen Roon (the app, not the server) to initiate a new RAATServer session. This will always prompt a RAATServer discovery cycle, just like restarting the computer.

If you only see locally-controlled (System Output, Mac Mini Speakers) Zones disappearing, restart coreaudio from the Terminal to force a handshake with RAATServer:

sudo killall coreaudiod should kill the audio daemon and restart it.

We’ll watch for your response and are actively monitoring this thread, also.

I’ve had this happen with my Mac. A reboot of the Mac seems to work, though I’ve no idea why. It might be that I’m running it headless, so have added Roon at startup as the only app. Maybe Roon is somehow getting ahead of network start or in the midst of completion.

Hi @connor , thanks for picking this up.

I am assuming this was caused by the upgrade process. Is that correct?

I did try this half an hour or so ago, following the comment at Mac Mini M4 OS 15.0 unable to find other devices (ref#W71GLN) - #4 by jacky30717. However it made no difference.

Thanks - I tried this a couple of times but it did not seem to make any difference.

Thanks - this seems to have worked - I could not do this before now as I had work meetings to attend online.

I’m pleased it worked for you :+1:

Sometimes the less obvious following a Roon update can also be the easiest fix.

I spend every day at work driving to customers sites and turning things off/on to make them work

Hi @herewego,

We’re glad to hear it’s working for now. We’re still investigating the cause of the crash with development. If you’re willing, please check the Console (Applications → Utilities) for any crash reports related to RAATServer on 4/16 and upload them here at your convenience: Log Uploader

Please let us know if this issue reproduces in the meantime and we’ll be collecting diagnostics.

@connor,

I’m another Mac user - identical issue. Solution is to quit Roon Server from the task bar - top right icon (near the clock etc) - rather than quitting just the Roon application. This must be the same as restarting the RAATServer / service and this would get restarted on a reboot as well, which is why a reboot also works. Doing this is a lot quicker and less hassle than rebooting though.

I’m a recent subscriber and this has happened 2 or 3 times now, coinciding with a Roon update.

Has happened to me also after each of the last 3 updates. Reboot of the Mac Mini needed for Roon Server to see any nework devices. Please fix asap.
