Audio Stuttering and Unresponsive NUC Roon Server Issues in Roon Configuration (ref#DQO5OB)

Thanks for the reply

I did not swap the ethernet. The mesh router is right next to the Eversolo. However, now I feel none of that is the issue and I seem to have identified the real problem. Please check out the edit in my previous post.

Hi @Akshay_Shetty,

Incredible troubleshooting work! Certainly let me know how testing goes.

When your NUC becomes unresponsive, are you still able to see it active from the list of IPs on your network?

Are you able to access the webUI of your ROCK when it falls into this state? I’m curious to know if Roon Server itself is no longer running. Here’s more info on that:

Are you unable to connect from any remote device available?

I haven’t really checked the IP list. I will do that when it stops again and let you know.

I am able to see the interface page however, i can not reboot the device from there. Whenever I do , it says reboot failed and then i have to go manually reboot.

Thats correct.

I came across a post with the same problem. They found a solution by reinstallig the ROCK OS. I have reinstalled it as well. I will wait and see for a couple of days if it hangs up again.

I will get back to you.

Hi @benjamin

The Roon has been on for 13 days since I last rebooted it and hasn’t hung up yet. I think reinstalling RoonOS has solved the problem. I will wait a couple more days to reaffirm this and post an update.

Hi @benjamin,

The day I replied last, Roon Server went unresponsive that night. However, this time I noticed that the internet had gone down and the Roon Server was not being recognised. I assumed that once the internet was back on the Roon Server would automatically start working again because it was working fine for 13 days before that, but it didn’t. So I had to reboot the NUC again manually.

I have attached the images of the IP page of the NUC as well as the error. There is one more error page that says the reboot failed and asked me to reboot manually, but the page reloaded before I could take a screenshot of it.

There is another problem that I have noticed quite a few times. I have my offline library as well as my backup folder on a per-drive which is attached to the USB-C port on the NUC. The NUC randomly stops reading the Pendrive again and again. The Roon is working but it won’t read the pendrive. Then I have to go remove and reinsert the pendrive and then it will read it again.

Look forward to your assistance in figuring out a solution.

Hi @Akshay_Shetty ,

In my experience - when the Networking/Ethernet section is missing like your screenshot, this indicates a failing M2 Opearting System SSD. I would advise replacing the M2 SSD, reinstalling ROCK using the ROCK install guide, and then restoring from a backup.

Hi,

Sorry for the late follow-up. Get caught up with commitments and it’s difficult to get back to the hobby at times.

Anyway, as you mentioned the issue seems to be with the SSD, are there any other troubleshooting steps that you would want me to undertake before I replace the SSD and check? I would like to eliminate all possible reasons before spending money on a new SSD.

The correct issues are;

The network just drops randomly in a couple of days and also the NUC just stops reading the USB drive which has my library. Earlier, it used to stop reading the drive occasionally, However now it is absolutely unable to read the USB drive.

I can confirm that the drive is working fine because I connected it to my Mac and I can access the drive and open the files.

I can also confirm that the USB port on the NUC is working fine. I inserted a cable in the port and connected my phone and the phone started charging.

At this point, I’m really confused as to what might the problem be.

Hi @Akshay_Shetty,

The web administration page screenshot you shared showed evidence of BIOS-level failures on this machine. Continuing to rely on this SSD for RoonServer puts your database at risk of latent corruption that may be very difficult to isolate later on.

Replacing the SSD is indeed a heavy-handed step; but any other troubleshooting suggestions, at this point, would only suffice as bandages.

You’ll need to follow this guide to flash ROCK onto the new SSD once it’s in place.

Hi @connor

If that’s what you strongly recommend then I’ll give replacing the SSD a shot. Are there any recommended SSDs?

Additionally, do you think the NUC being unable to read the USB drive is also related to the issue with the SSD? When I restart the NUC and the Roon starts functioning normally again, the USB drive is still not being read by the NUC.

Also, another strange behaviour I noticed with the NUC Is that after the NUC loses network connection and I haven’t tended to it for some days, when I go to restart the NUC, pressing the power button does nothing and neither does holding down the power button. I have to physically remove the power cable and reattach it. After I do that, the power button starts working again normally no matter how many times I press it to turn the NUC off and on again, until the cycle of losing network connection and it being left unattended again repeats.

Very strange behaviour and I can’t make any sense of it. Hoping you would have some idea as to what might be causing this behaviour.

Thank you.

Hi @connor @noris @benjamin,

Any opinion as to what might be causing the above-mentioned issue?

Hey @Akshay_Shetty,

Here is a link to one SSD option we recommend to many users:

After that, you’ll need to format the SSD. We have a good help article you can find here for next steps. Start from step #3 :

Essentially, you’ll be flashing the ROCK OS to a USB drive, and using it to boot and format the new SSD.

Thank you for the reply @benjamin.

I have changed the SSD. I was unable to find the SSD you recommended in stock when I needed it, so I ended up going with Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250GB PCIe NVMe M.2 (2280).

I have installed the SSD and set up ROCK on the it again. Have my fingers crossed. I hope doing this has resolved the problem.

I will give you an update soon.

Thank you

Hi @Akshay_Shetty,
We look forward to hearing back from you.

@daniel 20 days today since I installed the new SSD and the Roon Server has been going strong without hanging at all. As suggested by @noris and further confirmed by @connor the older SSD does indeed seem to be what was causing the NUC to hang from time to time. The problem seems to have been resolved now that I have installed a new SSD.

The one thing I have noticed though as you can see in the attached image is that on the Roon Web Admin page, the Operating System shows its been on since 20 days, but the ROCK software has restarted twice without me doing anything. Roon seemed to not communicate with the Roon Serve for a very short time during that time but then resumed without me needing to intervene in any way. Is that normal? And if yes, then why does that happen?
