Description of Issue

Unfortunately I have had seldom audio zone drop outs with my roon setup lately. When I play music on my Mac after short periods of time the audio stops and my selected audio zone is missing. After a few moments it returns and I can start playback again. Only to then get a dropout again. The problem occurs every few minutes.

I have already rebooted every device.
Also disabling Jumbo Frames was not of any help.
Every Network interface is on 1500 MTU currently.

What else could be causing the issue?

Roon endpoint discovery/maintenance can glitch with more aggressive implementations of IGMP snooping in pro routers/switches. I’ve had such issues with Netgear managed switches several years ago, that I was able to tame by turning off IGMP snooping on the switch’s web control panel.

Your Maratz is reporting an address Roon can’t use. You should look into that.

You’ve got a lot of AirPlay devices. Are these the ones dropping out? When this happens grab an iOS device and verify the thing is still visible on the network. This doesn’t feel like a “Roon” issue to me but a general Airplay issues of devices not being able to continuous broadcast their services. Or their IPs are changing or something similar. This looks like Airplay discovery issues.

EDIT: Also, don’t use the OS Mixer if you care at all about sound quality.

Thanks for sharing your idea. Unfortunately disabling IGMP on the Netgear Switch did not change anything to the better for me.

Thanks for letting me know! The audio device “marantz” is an old AirPort Express that I have connected to my vintage HiFi Receiver in order for it to be accessible for AirPlay streaming. When I do an IP-Scan with Network Radar the AirPort device has an IP of 192.168.1.52 - So far I have zero issues playing audio on this device with Roon.

Also the other HomePod mini devices I rarely use for music as they are too bass heavy for my linking.

The dropout issue is with my Mac Studio Computer, which is connected to an Apollo Twin X Interface powering a pair of Genelec audio monitors.

P.S. You mentioned the OS Mixer produces inferior sound quality. What am I supposed to use instead? I was estimating things were alright because of the green indicator next to the OS Mixer.

OS Mixer is a “shared” device and allows the OS to set things like volume and do other things to the signal. If you want to hear system sounds along with your Roon playback then that’s the only way. Otherwise, use one of the CoreAudio outputs and set it to “Exclusive”. This will make sure al bitstream gets to the output untouched.

Hey @Jan_Budke,

Following up on this thread, can you please grab a specific timestamp (date, time) the next time your Mac experiences this dropout?

Does this happen when streaming local content? Or, tracks from Tidal or Qobuz? How is your Mac connected to your network?
