Auto shutdown/Switch On?

I have an Intel NUC with ROCK installed. I have noticed it runs hot even when I am not playing anything. It is also on 24/7. Is there any plans to add an option to turn off the hardware when not needed? In my case, I would look to have my NUC shutdown at midnight and turn back on around 10am daily. When I used ROON on my NAS it had this setting.

This is not normal. Clean the fans if you haven’t in a while.

Nobody knows if Roon Labs have plans, they wouldn’t say if they did but probably not. However, you can do this by a combination of

  • Enable wake-on-LAN in the NUC BIOS, then send a wake-on-lan command from another computer to turn it on.
  • Send a shutdown command from another computer to the http interface of Roon OS.

There are many existing threads about this and the forum search will find details. For the shutdown command, refer to the most recent thread(s) because the exact format changed recently (though I believe only for recent ROCK installations based on UEFI)

This sounds strange to me. Something is not right. I’ve had a NUC/ROCK running 24/7 since July of 2019. It may have been shutdown a dozed times since it was new and only cleaned once. The only time I’ve noticed it getting hot was when I did a full backup of the internal library and the heat was coming from the 4TB SSD beneath the top cover while being accessed continuously for 3 to 4 hours .

Is the NUC in a well ventilated area? Do you have internal storage?

I’d look for the cause of it running hot while following @Suedkiez suggestions.

I have stripped it down and cleaned the fan (not much in it). It is the top plate of the case that is very warm to the touch, nothing blocking the vents. I have a 3TB SSD storage that sits directly under the top plate. I have checked it just now and it is quite warm although the rest of the case is cool enough. I have no music playing and no backups running.

As stated above my Samsung 4tb SSD, and the nuc in general, only gets warm to the touch with the constant use of the SSD during a full backup, and probably with the initial loading of the files. I put a small high speed fan blowing on it during those rare occasions and that keeps it cool to the touch, probably wicking away the heat.

Sound like something is accessing the SSD or it has a problem.

Thanks for that. I will try and get to the bottom of it.
