After I downloaded and applied the roonarc apk to get version 161, ARC disappeared from my Android Auto. Previously it had been available and I had used it regularly. In the settings for Android Auto (on my Android phone) it does not appear on the list of apps avalable to Android Auto. What’s gone wrong?
Build 161 is only available in Early Access and issues occurring after EA updates should be posted in EA, so moved this to #early-access
Have you turned on developer mode and enabled the “unknown sources” option?
I don’t know how to do this.
The thing is that by installing an APK you are going around the Google Play Store and it requires special permissions to allow this for security reasons.
Note that for using Early Access it is not necessary to install from an APK. You can instead simply join the Beta program for Roon in the Play Store, following the instructions here:

If you want to install from APK:
Note that if installing from APK, you will NOT get further updates through the Play Store and instead have to install updates by APK. For this reason, I personally prefer the Beta through the Play Store even if it takes a few days longer to appear.
I am not entirely sure that installing from APK requires to enable developer mode as well, the above instructions don’t mention it. I have had developer mode on my phone enabled forever, so I don’t know if APK installs would have failed without it. If you have to, here’s instructions:
