B180 / B1275 Clipping in ARC after MUSE update [Ticket in]

Latest update (yesterday) with MUSE causes clipping.

Anyone else noticed this?

Sample rate conversion is DSP.

And from DSP Engine: Headroom Management:

But the app has always sample rate converted for compatibility before this Muse thing like any zone does and did not get clipping, well you can’t hear it which normally it’s pretty easy to hear as you could not set anything before until this new Muse. So by your definitions arc constantly must have been clipping since release?

Matey,

You just love correcting me. Thank you but not helpful.

Maybe poor choice of words on my part but others seem to have understood what I tried to point out.

Will edit to make it clearer and avoid confusion.

That said, clipping was not indicated in signal path before MUSE.

Before MUSE there was no Roon owned DSP on the phone, so no way for Roon to track and indicate clipping. Sample rate conversion on the phone was handled outside of Roon by the phone OS so the last sentence shown in my screenshot above applied to that situation.

Sorry but this looks very much like ARC is resampling content on my phone for BT as you can see it’s altering the bit depth. I am not using Muse this is the regular release.

Then I assume you also can’t enable headroom management and clipping indicator in DSP settings for ARC on your phone (because afaik it’s a feature of MUSE).

No I can’t but I also don’t hear any evidence of clipping in what I hear and I am sure many would have heard it doing so given the amount of compressed sources out there and prevalence of BT headsets used for ARC. As they enforce opus which is 48k then it’s not something you can avoid either if on cellular. Maybe it does clip and we are all unaware but that means ARC has been substandard since day one.

To each it’s own believes. I never heard any inter-sample overs with current equiment that does clip instead of wrapping over.

@RBO what where you playing that showed clipping?

Hi, @RBO, thank you for the report. May I ask you to share this file with us? Could you, please, upload it here.

Thanks!

Ivan

This one.

Hey Ivan,

The logs you mean?

Not available for me on Qobuz so can’t test it out.

Nope, the actual file, @RBO, based on your first screenshot, it’s a local file, so it would be good for us to test it locally to understand what’s going on.

Thanks!

Ivan

Oh, gotcha.

Will sort it out when I get home

The one in my screenshot above is not local and it also clips. It’s from Qobuz.

There’s a lot of tracks that will clip during sample rate conversion. This is metal, so I’m not surprised. Unless there’s a way to apply headroom, there’s not much you can do. I for one don’t think I’d be able to hear that clipping, especially with this genre.

It’s probably always been there but only visible now with MUSE.

I play mostly metal and don’t remember ever seeing my clipping indicator turn red.

The reason I posted about this is because I did not have it happen before this last update.

Give we are meant to report anything unusual we come across in earlyaccess, I believe I’ve done my part and reported it

@RBO, quick question here. Could you, please, tell me if the clipping goes away in case you are use automatic setting for the Headroom Management? Based on your signal path it might be disabled.

Thanks!
