I had the dreaded post-update “poor connection” message in ARC on my Android tablet and reset it. At the same time I was using ARC on the phone. After resetting in the tablet, it asked me to log in through the SSO website. After entering my credentials, it told me in strong words that I should only log in if I downloaded the app directly from Roon, and else I should immediately delete it.
This seemed strange and I ignored it. I have ARC installed from the Play Store (Beta) and don’t see why I shouldn’t, so I logged in anyway.
No problems after that, but it seems like a strange message that would cause a lot of forum questions.
Not just side loaded, but also apps that are pretending to be ARC/RoonRemote from Roon Labs on those app stores. There are a lot of fake apps out there on the app stores.
“downloaded from Roon” makes no sense in this day and age of App Stores. No one downloads “from Roon” anymore. Unless you give me credentials to your FTP server (or the like) and then, actually, on my platforms I can’t install a “download” without a number of hurdles because my mobile OS will only install from approved app stores.
Better wording is:
Only login if you installed this app from the developer “Roon Labs”. You can find the publisher of this app in the app store.
Another thing you could do is move your desktop apps to the Apple and Microsoft stores. Again, help the user check the publisher / developer. This would provide more consistent behavior between desktop and mobile as well as give you a way to try and pull copycat apps from these platforms when they do pop-up.
This applies not just to the iOS/Android apps, but also to the Roon apps for Mac and Windows which can not use the respective app stores because those apps are too sandboxed to do the Roon USB and audio magic.
