B200 SSO - "only log in if you downloaded this app directly from Roon"

I had the dreaded post-update “poor connection” message in ARC on my Android tablet and reset it. At the same time I was using ARC on the phone. After resetting in the tablet, it asked me to log in through the SSO website. After entering my credentials, it told me in strong words that I should only log in if I downloaded the app directly from Roon, and else I should immediately delete it.

This seemed strange and I ignored it. I have ARC installed from the Play Store (Beta) and don’t see why I shouldn’t, so I logged in anyway.

No problems after that, but it seems like a strange message that would cause a lot of forum questions.

Rogue android apps side loaded probably a reason for such warnings

Yes but it is the wrong wording.

Not just side loaded, but also apps that are pretending to be ARC/RoonRemote from Roon Labs on those app stores. There are a lot of fake apps out there on the app stores.

I avoid android and always have

Fake apps are common on the iOS App Store as well.

Rogue apps being sideloaded on Android devices is a very uncommon thing, regardless of what the media/Apple would like you to believe.

Maybe you can get the 88% of the world that use Android to join you on that crusade

However large the sideload and fake app issues are, this is what Roon’s download page says:

So don’t go and tell the user that this is super bad and should be uninstalled when they log in

I forgot to reply to this.

“downloaded from Roon” makes no sense in this day and age of App Stores. No one downloads “from Roon” anymore. Unless you give me credentials to your FTP server (or the like) and then, actually, on my platforms I can’t install a “download” without a number of hurdles because my mobile OS will only install from approved app stores.

Better wording is:
Only login if you installed this app from the developer “Roon Labs”. You can find the publisher of this app in the app store.

Another thing you could do is move your desktop apps to the Apple and Microsoft stores. Again, help the user check the publisher / developer. This would provide more consistent behavior between desktop and mobile as well as give you a way to try and pull copycat apps from these platforms when they do pop-up.

We removed the word “directly”.

This applies not just to the iOS/Android apps, but also to the Roon apps for Mac and Windows which can not use the respective app stores because those apps are too sandboxed to do the Roon USB and audio magic.
