Backing up ROCK to the NUC’s internal storage

I have a new NUC running ROCK. I used a usb stick formatted with EXFAT to transfer my database from the old core (running on a Mac mini).

How do I direct ROCK to make scheduled backups to the NUC’s internal storage (it has an M.2 SSD for the operating system and a 1TB SSD for music - this is currently empty).

I am not very technical and will need an idiot’s guide. I can find the USB in settings>backup but would like to remove this USB and start internal scheduled backups as I used to do on the Mac.

Thank you

It is not a good idea to set your backup location to either the OS drive or the internal storage in the ROCK. As the internal storage is the “Watched” location.

See here for more details.

Also,

It’s best to use an external location (NAS, external USB drive, shared network drive/directory) to do database backups. As noted these locations should “NOT” be watched folders.

Also worth considering your backup strategy for music, assuming you also have ripped CDs on a drive. This isn’t currently part of the Roon product, so you should consider separate software which can access your ROCK music drive and then run backups to a separate drive.

I have daily backups to an old Mac mini then a versioned on-site backup using Time Machine and versioned off-site backups to the Cloud, using Backblaze. All drives fail eventually, so this is a natural precaution for those of us who originally spent many days ripping our CD collections in the past and would hate to repeat the experience!

Great thanks. My approach will now comprise:

1 Attach an external SSD to the NUC via usb for regular scheduled backups.

2 Use the current usb stick for additional ad hoc forced backups.

3 Backup my music files on the mac mini.

4 Have a go at making Roon data backups to the mac mini via my network (I don’t know how to do this so it will be a project!). If there is an easy way to direct a backup to the mac please let me know…I guess I will need a “path” to insert in the “Network Share Location” field within the Settings/Backups/Add Folder field.
There is help on the Roonlabs site so I’d better get learning

This article has the steps needed for setting up a Watched Folder on a Mac. It will be similar for setting up a Backup Folder on a Mac as well…
