Describe the issue

2 issues, backup of ROON database keeps failing and ROON server (Titan) not automatically pulling new music from pc. With that said, the Titan has ROON database software on the Titan, correct? Before Titan server was also on windows pc, as I loaded up my Apple library the ROON instantly recognized it in the ROON library, shouldn’t that be happening the same way with the Titan

Describe your network setup

New to ROON, but started with windows pc on windows 11 utilizing iTunes then bought the Titan and incorporated it into my audio (media) room. The Titan and ps audio airlens is connected via ethernet. I can copy and paste music files from pc to internal storage

That photo is a little unclear, but I suspect that you need to set up your scheduled backups again. It looks as though the filepaths to the Backups’ locations are still from when they were on your Windows PC.

Now that you are using a Titan, if you want to carry on using these locations on the PC, you will have to share the folders over the network and edit the locations in Roon’s Scheduled Backups screen to point to the network shares.

See this article for what you need to do; it’s for adding Watched Folders, but the same procedure works for adding Backup Folders…

BTW, this is how you can add screenshots into forum posts:

Hey @Richard_Durham,

Thanks for writing in!

I believe @Geoff_Coupe is absolutely correct in their above statement - let us know if this helps! :+1:

Hi Folks,
Using the Titan, and I’m noticing my backups are failing and I need to figure out why.

Why I have 2 listings, I couldn’t tell you. then thde backup manager shows:

Any help is much appreciated.

Did you not see my previous post in this thread? You need to edit the Backup locations by clicking the “3 dots” menu next to the location entry and choosing edit. You need to set up the location using a network share.

Your first Backup entry shows that you have a Backup scheduled for 9pm every four days. Not a good time if you are using Roon to listen to music then. As the Backup article says:

Roon will be temporarily unavailable while the “snapshot” of your library is created, so make sure to schedule the backups for a time you’re rarely listening to music, like the middle of the night.

Hi @Richard_Durham,

Following up on your issue, we’re unfortunately not seeing any additional specific errors around your backup failure:

Debug: [Broker:Misc] [broker/filebrowser/entry] GetFSDir: volume was not available OS PM991a NVMe Samsung 512GB : !volume.IsAvailable

Have you attempted to edit the backup location via @Geoff_Coupe’s above comment? This may very well solve your issue - reestablishing the network connection.

Hi Folks,
Let me start this again, I’m wanting my Titan to be free of my PC. I have a dedicated “audio room” where the Titan is located, and the PC is downstairs on a desk. I only want to use the PC as a remote when I’m working at the PC. In the Audio room my remote, whether it’s an iPhone or a Crestron remote, should be able to do everything that the PC once did, including a backup. I’ve just started with Roon; therefore, my backup database shouldn’t be that large. Couldn’t the database in the titan just start from scratch? So, I just don’t understand what “Backup directory not available” means. why is it not available? The path starting with Nucleus Titan is where I want it, not the PC. The PC will be used to rip the CD’s and currently am drag and dropping to the internal storage of the Titan. Will use a different method when I stop using the iTunes library that is collecting the files. Then will set up a shared folder.

You can’t backup the Roon Titan to the drive that contains the operating system, if that is what you are trying to do. Connect a USB drive to the Titan and backup to that.

Where are your music files stored? Did you install a drive in the Titan to host your music files?

Music is on my pc. I’m copying to the Titan internal storage. Titan has an 8TB SSD, and I also have an external 8TB drive that I was going to back up the music files to. Could this also be used as the backup for the database? If I understand correctly this external drive needs to be formatted also with the web interface.

I think Roon recommends database backups on a separate drive as music backups. I don’t remember about the formatting. I would keep my music file backups far away from Roon in case something goes wrong. The last thing you want to happen is lose your music backups.

I backup my Nucleus Roon database to an attached USB 1 TB HDD. I hardly have any music files, but they are backed up to my Dell laptop via my network.

So, the 1TB HDD is attached to the Nucleus, correct?

Then Titan as several external USB storage areas, I could use one for the backup database and one for music files,

Your screenshot shows that the filepath to your Backup directory is:

NucleusTitan/OS/Users/dkdur/Roon Backups/RoonBackups.

As we’ve tried to point out, this is a very odd filepath definition. It looks more like a location on your PC. Did you have a Roon Backup directory in your user folder on your PC at one point?

Have you actually tried to edit this filepath in Roon as we suggested to point it to a Backup Folder location on your attached USB drive?

No, that is not correct. Only the internal storage drive can be formatted by the Web Administration interface.

Good morning, Geoff and Jim. Thank you both for your help. I kept reading over and over your suggestions and then that file path. I had successfully done a backup before but why now is it failing.
Mistakenly I was trying to have the Titan store the backup, then Jim you had your backup ‘attached’ to your Nucleus. Thats when I realized I had pulled the SanDisk thumb drive out of my Nucleus. Plugged it back in did a backup. It worked. After plugging back in I looked at the file path and Geoff, you can guess what I found. Will probably have to get a little bigger external drive as the backup grows. Thank you both again for your patience. Not very good at the computer functions but I love music.
