Roon Core Machine NUC11TNHi3, 8 GB RAM, RoonOS Networking Gear & Setup Details Router: Fritzbox 7590AX, USB hard disk connected to Fritzbox, Roon core connected via Ethernet to the Fritzbox. Roon is configured to make backups on the USB hard disk connected to the Fritzbox. A backup works exactly one time. A second backup at any later time (also immediately after the first one) fails. When the back up directory that Roon created during the first backup is deleted or renamed, then a new backup is possible. This means that scheduled backups are not possible. Creating a new backup requires deleting or renaming by hand the previous one. I'd be grateful for advice on how to solve this issue.
The Fritz!box only supports a drive drawing up to 900 mA. Because Roon backup are incremental, it is possible that the HDD is drawing more (greater disk activity). Therefore, yoy could try using the drive with a powered USB hub.
Furthermore, the router only allows a single connection to the drive, so you may want to check this.
Thank you for these hints.
However, the USB drive is already powered by a dedicated power supply, and there is only this one single USB drive connected to the router. There is this option for the router for “At a distnace USB connection” which allows only one computer, or similar, to connect to the USB drive. However, this option is turned off and it does allow several devices at once to be connected to the USB drive.
Originally I had an USB drive connected directly to the NUC, however it didn’t recognize that drive, and I didn’t know how to tell the Roon operating system how to include an external drive and make it accessible for backups.
The USB drive attached to the Fritzbox works fine for all other purposes. Just the Roon backup has problems.
“Weihnachtsstern” is the name of the network. Then, the Fritzbox has these preinstalled folders. When mounting the USB drive, it appears as an additional folder (“Porsche”), like the preinstalled ones (please see the enclosed screenshot).
If I now change the roon backup destination directly to Weihnachststern, then Roon attempts to use for backup the built-in very limited storage of the Fritzbox instead of the USB drive.
Thanks for reaching out with your request. I activated diagnostics mode and I noticed that you are getting an interesting error that appears to be referencing a stale mount link. It looks like the error is identical to the one described in the below thread:
I would try to focus on this solution, how was the USB drive formatted when you plugged it into the NUC, was it by any chance using NTFS? If it was using NTFS, can you try to format it as exFAT and see if it then shows up as a proper storage location in Roon? Thanks!
