Describe the issue

I used a headless late 2014 Mac Mini with a spinny HD to host my Roon server without problems until it started crashing intermittently over the last few weeks. I know its old kit but decided I would like to give it a new lease of life by replacing the old Mac OS with Ubuntu on an external SSD. Partly a learning project for me (never used Linux) but I hoped it would improve performance and stability.
Ubuntu installation of latest version - no problem. Roon server more tricky. It took a lot of research time which could have been avoided if the Roon website catered for novices - but eventually got it running.
Now I have a server which works, identifies all my devices, recognises library tracks and plays well. But I cant get it to restore my library from a backup. I have tried several backups but all hang at about 30%.
I installed a server on my iMac and that restores fine from the backups so they are not damaged. A new backup made from the iMac still crashed on the Ubuntu system. However backups created on the Ubuntu system work - for what that is worth.
Is there an issue with backups across different OSs?
I could easily go back to MacOS but I have invested so much time I would like to complete the project. I may even buy one of the new Mac Minis, which are brilliant value but is seems a waste to use so much kit for a headless Roon server even though they come in cheaper than the Roon one.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Describe your network setup

Virgin hub 5 in modem mode with an Eero mesh router. The Mac Mini is connected by ethernet.

Hi @Steve_Smith4 ,

Thanks for reaching out with your message. We’ve activated diagnostics for the Ubuntu Roon Server but it doesn’t appear to be online at the moment. When you have a chance, can you turn the server on, let it run for at least a few minutes and then let us know here so that we can check the logging for clues as to the restore failure? Thanks!

Update
You can buy an old Mac for next to nothing but dont skimp on the storage. The problem was a discount SSD which was causing the crashing.
I invested in a decent drive and reinstalled MacOS and everything is fine.
Still dont understand the cause of the restore failure but now I dont care.
And at least now I know I dont like Linux.

Thanks Norris. As posted in the update above the problem is now fixed, though I never got to the bottom of the failure to restore from backup.
The crashing was due to a faulty SSD so I got a new one and am fine now with MacOS.
