Backup - Unable to backup to prior Backup folder

I generally make a backup once a month, then delete prior backups, usually keeping three. I am on a Synology DS1515+ NAS currently but have purchased an ASUS NUC and plan to migrate to ROCK. Roon runs on a Samsung 850 Pro SSD, 256 KB in the DS with no problems. Media files (FLACS) are located on the DS (1,500 folders, 13,000 files) and fewer links to Tidal albums added to the database.

I am trying to make one final backup prior to the move to the NUC and I am unable to start the backup to the folder used in the past. Roon will not let me drill down to the backup folder on the DS that I have use in the past. I can see the parent folder, but when I click on it I get the message *“Error loading folder - Unauthorized”. If I try to select a different share on the DS it allows me to drill down to that folder but returns a different message: “Backup failed at [time] / Unable to create backup directory”. I’m not using the NUC yet, this is all on my Lenovo laptop that was used to create backups from in the past.

I am in the only “User” on the NAS and am a member of the Administrators group. I’ve read about setting up a Network Share but have never needed to do that in the past as I was able to click through DS directories within ROON. I any case I have tried to use the “smb” format to set up a network share without success.

I have read a lot of articles in the knowledge base about this issue and have tried a number of the recommended solutions with no success.

btw - If I try to manually change the permissions to the backup folder on the NAS it goes through a process of drilling down through more than 20,000 items taking well over 10 minutes. Why is the format of backup file structure so folder intensive and inefifcient?

First off, I’m pretty sure you are using Synology HyperBackup. Is that correct? You are trying to back up to an external hard disk that you can remove and physically connect to your new set up. Is that correct? For what it’s worth, you cannot use Synology HyperBackup to back up to an SMB share.

DDPS – Thanks for the reply. No, I am not using Synology Hyper Backup. I am attempting to backup with the utility within Roon. It has worked in the past. I will post a few screen shots of what I am seeing. But first, here is my setup:

Synology DS has:
3 x 3TB Western Digital Red in a Raid 5 configuration. All my media files are on this share.
1 x 6TB Western Digital Red Pro. This is used for backups of the Media files and several Laptops.
1 x The Samsung SSD that has the Roon OS.

My prior backups are on a share of \Jupitor. You see them in Explorer, but Roon does not allow access.
I will post a few screenshots:

Windows Explorer: A screen shot of the folders in the above shares

Roon Backup Utility: Attempt to back up to the \Jupitor folder I have previously made a backup to. This is where my previous backups are located. Roon does not allow me access to the folder. This folder is not in a Raid.

Roon Backup Utility: Attempt to back up to the \Polaris folder that contains my media files. Again, Roon prevents access.

That backup only backs up your Roon database, not your music. Is that what you are concerned with at this point? Just making sure…

Beyond that, are you using a username/password to connect to that share? You will have to specify it when using the “Add network share” function. You might need to remove the existing share and re-add it with your username and password again.

Also, reminder, when connecting to a Synology share, you start by connecting to the root of the share, and browse the folders on the right side from there. Do not specify subfolders when filling out the “Network share location.”

My Media Files are backed up. I am trying to create a backup of my Roon database prior to migrating off the NAS to a new NUC. I may have questions once I get to setting up the NUC but for now I am only seeking help to make a backup of the database.

As I said previously, I have read the knowledge base about setting up a “smb://host/share”. But I am unable to get it to work. Can you provide instructions on what is entered at “Network Share Location”. It can point to a folder on the DS or local to my laptop. (As far as I can remember, I never needed to do this in past, I simply clicked down through the NAS share to the folder containing the backup.)

Before finishing this submission I tried again to set up a location for the backup. In DS I created a new share called “Roon_Backups” and give myself full permissions. In windows explorer I right clicked on the folder, Properties and gave myself full Permissions. Then under Advanded, Permissions I have Allow…Full Control, and under Share it shows Type: Allow, Principal: Everyone. In Roon, when I choose this new folder to backup, Roon Returns “Error loading folder/Unauthorized”.
