I like several recordings of the string quartets; one I discovered not so long ago is the second complete cycle recording by the Alexander Quartet on Foghorn Classics:

I love the Alexander String Quartet!

Talking of new releases, there is Vol.1 of a new cycle of Beethoven’s quartets by the Dover Quartet. This was released only a month ago on Cedille, and both musicianship as well as recording and mastering quality are very enjoyable, indeed.

The last three piano sonatas played on a 1901 Steinway D with a lovely low register… This is well worth a listen!

Of course, the Septet can’t be left out…

Or the Piano Trios!

Of all the great interpretations and recordings of the 9th Symphony, this version by L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Ernest Ansermet will always be the one closest to my heart. This is because one nice day being still very little, my mother brought home this recording on vinyl for me, and I had the privilege to use and abuse this LP until it was quite unplayable. Many years later, my mother not anymore alive and I having migrated to South America, I had me sent another pristine copy of the original Decca pressing which I still enjoy from time to time.
