Best endpoint OS

I am using ROON (on a dedicated MacMini). I have an endpoint consisting of an RPI4 with a DigiOne Signature HAT. Until now I have used RoPieee as an endpoint which worked fine.

However, there seem to be other flavours around (I’ve seen DietPi, Audiolinux, Snakeoil) and I am wondering if there are any recommendations from experience here.

I will only ever use ROON, no need for other protocols or extra’s. Main interest is SQ and I don’t mind paying something to support a talented developer. I also do not have a problem will a little command line tinkering.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts!

I have a similar setup consisting of a MacBook Pro feeding a Raspberry Pi 5 with a Digi2 Pro HAT. The Raspberry Pi runs GentooPlayer, with mpd/umpdcli active. GentooPlayer is most stable, in contrast to AudioLinux that is, in my hands at least, less stable. I was wondering if HQPlayer Embedded might bring something to the table. I haven‘t tried, but is easily doable via GentooPlayer.

Similar setup to my main rig, which has an RPi 3B and Allo DigiONE. I use Ropieee for convenience and reliability. The OS should have zero impact on audio, so don’t be too concerned about transport OS.

You just need an OS supporting the HAT. No need to change from RoPieee IMO.

Go with what others have mentioned here, RoPieee is simple and robust

You get regular updates and @spockfish is the best :sign_of_the_horns:

Thanks a lot!
General consensus is that it does not seem to matter for sound quality, only for ease of use. Since I am familiar with RoPieee I will probably stick to that.
Thanks again!
