I am starting to learn roon and find that when looking at the albums, roon sometimes displays several of the same albums with individual tracks inside. I have found that the tracks are separated into each album copy based on artist. Furthermore, when looking at the location of the particular track, I see it is in a folder for that particular artist. This happens to quite a few of my ‘various artist’ albums.
I am wondering if moving the individual tracks from the folder under each artist, to a folder under ‘various artists - album’ would solve the problem of displaying several albums with individual tracks.
I know I can ‘merge’ the display to show as one album, but am wondering if it is worth the effort to collate all the tracks for a given album an put them all under one folder. If so, how do I move the tracks via roon? Can that be done from an endpoint, or does it have to be done at the core machine?
What you are describing sounds like possibly a known bug with Various Artists that has been happening for months. There is a fix in the making and I wouldn’t change anything in your folders and files for now. Instead, I’d first wait for the fix to be released, which probably will happen in a few weeks at most most likely it will help and if it doesn’t, then you’ll at least know that it’s not the same issue.
Very good. I had read a long post about a bug similar to my issue, but incorrectly assumed it had been fixed.
For future reference, what is the process of moving files from one folder to another from within roon? Is it the export function, and can it be done from a machine other than the core?
The fix has been in Early Access testing for 3 days. Normally, if feedback is good, it should be released about 10-14 days later. I suppose they might want to get it out before Christmas.
If it’s moving between folders on the same disk, then the „move“ is technically just a renaming, as far as the operating system is concerned. You can simply do that in your regular file manager without special precautions.
What kind of machine are you using to run the RoonServer (core) and what are you using as a remote control device?
The core server is on a Windows 10 machine. I can use a windows laptop, ipad or android to control. Reason I asked about making file changes from a remote is that the core is located on a rack and if I have to work directly on the core it means standing in front of the physical rack to manipulate the mouse and keyboard. Much more comfortable sitting in my recliner and working while listening to music.
I see. then you can share the music folder on the server with Windows file sharing and then access it from another machine in the regular Windows File Explorer > Network. You can move there just as well. If making larger changes/moves, it may be best to quit the RoonServer on the server machine before making the changes, and then restart it when done. This way it only “sees” the final state
Outstanding idea! I had all but forgotten about shared folders. That should work and allow the shared folder on the core to appear on the machine I am using to make changes. Thank you very much. I will play around with that idea when I get a chance.
