A fellow Roon user suggested that I use Headroom management and sample rate conversion….Tried that and now the Arcam SA-45 shows all tracks as 44.1kHz 24 bit …..whilst Roon app in the signal path is showing them between 44.1kHz 16 bit to 192kHz 24 bit.
Tried to downsample and the metadata of bit depth and sample rate disappears….when resorting back to 192kHz and 32 bit depth no longer shows MP3 but shows metadata of 44.1kHz and 24 bit for all audio files despite their bit depth and sample rate on Roon app. Remember I enabled Headroom management and enabled sample rate conversion to MAX PCM rate ( power of 2)
All DSPing in Roon works in 64 bit for accuracy and sound quality. The audio is left at the highest bit rate your DAC will support as any further conversion back to original bit depth could degrade quality.
The bit depth you mention is normal behavior and what you want for best sound quality when DSPing in roon.
If you want your DAC to display the original bit depth, turn off the DSPing you have Roon set to do.
If you are expecting a higher sample rate display at your DAC check the maximum sample rate setting in Roon device setup for your DAC. Attach screen shots of your device setup and your signal path. Also attach screenshots of your oversampling settings.
The issue I see is your signal path is leaving the bit depth as 32 bit and your DAC doesn’t recognize it. I’d set your DAC bit depth to max 24 bit in Roon
Restart your DAC and see if it resets itself. I’m thinking it’s the problem not Roon or sending 32 bit to your DAC when it doesn’t support it is causing the issue.
Bit depth now set to 24 bit and still the issue persists… as no metadata of sample rate or bit depth is shown on Arcam SA-45 when all DSP is turned off on Roon.
In Roon go to settings → Audio → Device Setup → SA45 and load the default settings. Reboot Roon core and SA45 and report back the settings page, signal path and a picture from SA45 showing the wrong data
Tried Stefan_Mauron’s suggestion ….The SA45 doesn’t show any sample rate or bit depth metadata whilst as you can see below in the signal path the Roon app does…..
Looking at your two screenshots, I think this actually explains the issue quite well: In both cases you’re using Roon as the source, but the Arcam SA45 behaves differently: in one case it shows a (different) bitrate than Roon, while in the other case it shows no bitrate at all. Hence, same source, same signal path but different display behaviour on the device.
That strongly suggests this is not an audio problem, but how the SA45 interprets and reports the incoming stream.
So what you’re seeing is most likely an inconsistency in the SA45’s reporting logic rather than any real change in audio quality.
Thank you for the detailed information and for trying those DSP workarounds.
If Roon’s Signal Path is showing the correct output bit depth and sample rate, but the Arcam SA45’s front panel is either getting stuck on MP3 or displaying a flat 44.1kHz/24-bit, this points to a communication or display interpretation issue on the hardware side.
I am going to report this directly to our hardware certification team so they can investigate and attempt to reproduce this behavior with our internal testing units.
To help our team and ensure we have all the necessary facts, could you please provide a little more information?
Firmware Version: What is the exact firmware version currently installed on your Arcam SA45?
Arcam Support: Have you already reported this specific display issue to Arcam support? Since the display panel is governed by their device firmware, they may already be aware of this bug or have a patch in development.
Yes Arcam Radia SA-45 firmware version 01.21 and System Software 1.10.2.0x7b4b702….Yes I have informed Arcam support and they are taking a look into the issue….it may take some time they said.
We’ve now reported this issue to our development team, and it appears to be specific to the interaction between Roon and the SA45. At this stage, I don’t have a timeline for an update to address this issue.
In the meantime, I’d recommend keeping Network Standby enabled, as the SA45 will automatically receive updates when they become available.
Rest assured, the issue has been escalated and is being looked into. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, it’s been very helpful for our visibility.
If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know.
