Hello, I have 4 Bluesound speakers. One of them is giving me problems, “Kitchen.” Look at the screenshots.
The first screenshot shows my “Studio” speaker working perfectly, as do both “Bedroom” speakers. The second screenshot shows that the “Kitchen” speaker is connected to Roon but nothing else follows. The fourth screenshot shows the volume is greyed out. Music on the kitchen speaker does work on the Bluesound’s own app, just not in Roon. The fourth screenshot says that the volume is fixed. I tried to unfix it but can’t.
I can’t play any music through this speaker though the speaker is enabled. I’ve disconnected and reconnected the speaker. I’ve quit and restarted Roon on my computer and on my streamer. If I try to group all four players together, no music will play. The play > is greyed out. Please help. Thank you.

When a Bluesound speaker’s volume becomes grayed out or permanently stuck on “Fixed” in Roon, and the Play button stops responding, it almost always means the internal “Roon Ready” software module inside that specific speaker has frozen or been exclusively locked by another protocol (like Spotify Connect, AirPlay, or Bluetooth).
Even though the speaker works fine in its native BluOS app, the specific pathway Roon uses to communicate with it is jammed, causing it to misreport its volume capabilities and refuse playback commands. Restarting Roon or the streamer won’t fix this because the jam is happening on the speaker’s own hardware.
Here is how we can force that internal module to reset and unlock your volume control:
1. The Hard Power Cycle
Since a soft reboot doesn't always clear the Roon module's cache, we need to completely cut the power.
Physically unplug the "Kitchen" speaker from the wall outlet.
Wait for at least 30 seconds.
Plug it back in and wait for the LED indicator to show it has fully reconnected to your network.
2. Clear the BluOS Queue
Sometimes, a stuck track or paused radio station in the native Bluesound app will block Roon from taking control.
Open your native BluOS app on your phone or computer.
Select the "Kitchen" speaker.
Completely clear its active play queue.
3. Reconfigure in Roon
Once the speaker has booted back up and the queue is clear, Roon should now properly recognize its capabilities.
In Roon, go to Settings > Audio.
Click the gear icon (⚙) next to the "Kitchen" speaker and select Device Setup.
Look at the Volume Control setting. The dropdown menu should now be unlocked.
Change it from "Fixed" back to Device Volume.
Give this hard reset a try, and let us know if it brings your Kitchen speaker back to life!
Here’s an update. I called Bluesound today and the technician was very patient. He used Team Viewer to see what the problem was and worked on the fix for 1 1/2 hours. Everything he tried did not fix the problem, up until the end. I tried rebooting the speaker by unplugging it from the wall and holding down the play/pause button for 30 seconds. Did not work.
What solved the issue is the technician did a hard reboot of the Bluesound speaker remotely and then I unplugged and restarted my router. The problem is now solved.
I’m stunned actually. Even the Bluesound tech was scratching his head. He’d never seen this problem before. Doesn’t matter. First world problem and it’s solved. Thank you.
Great news! We’re very glad to hear that your issue is fully resolved, even if it took a deep reset of both the speaker and the router to finally get there.
Thank you for sharing the exact solution with the community - this will definitely be helpful to other users who might run into a similar situation.
Happy listening, and feel free to reach out if you ever have any other questions!
