Bug: Enabling flat (!) EQ shows clipping

Hi,

scenario in DSP while playing the track below:

  • enabling headroom management with 0 dB attenuation, and enabling clipping indicator:
    No clipping.

  • adding procedural EQ with a parametric EQ and left flat(!):
    Clipping detected.

I guess that not how it should be. This leads to wrong interpretationg / handling of headroom level.

Please double check, thanks!

Hello @NOA,

When Roon performs DSP operations on DSD content (with native DSD processing enabled) it expands the audio stream to a 64bit representation of the signal with the same sample rate of the original file. Once the DSP has been applied to the 64bit stream it is then modulated back to 1 bit DSD using the Sigma Delta modulator.

When the parametric EQ is enabled Roon will perform the 64bit expansion process even if
all of the bands are left flat.

It’s likely that inter-sample overs are occurring during the Sigma Delta modulation process, causing Roon’s clipping indicator to trip. This is an unavoidable phenomenon, you can see it occur when using PCM upsampling as well.

It is advisable to always use the Headroom Management feature when using Roon’s native DSD processing feature.

  • enabling headroom management with 0 dB attenuation, and enabling clipping indicator:
    No clipping.

In this scenario, Roon’s DSP is not engaged, it is simply looking for clipped samples.
