Since the release of build 247 (and also present in 248) when a new tracks starts playing that has a different resolution than what was playing before (44.1/16 track to 96/24 track for example) the Roon volume reduces dramatically.
If I have the Room volume set to 50% then it reduces to 6%. If Roon is set to 25% then it reduces to 2%. This is obviously frustrating when listening in Radio mode in particular as the music effectively stops every now and then if the resolution changes (still playing actually but just can’t hear it).
This may be due to my particular setup and the fact that I use a Mac mini with Roon Bridge connected via USB to a Naim DAC-V1. Exclusive mode is enabled and Volume Control is set to ‘Use Device Controls’ within Roon. The DAC-V1 is also setup to have its volume controlled by OSX and therefore Roon. This means that the Roon volume slider actually changes the volume within OSX (as can clearly be seen from the Audio Midi Setup app) and this then in turn directly controls the main volume setting on the DAC-V1 (which is great btw).
This did not happen before build 247 and the volume stayed consistent after a resolution change but I know that changes were introduced with this build in the CoreAudio area as 16/44.1 now works to the DAC-V1 that didn’t work before (it used to be transmitted as 24/44.1).
Hi @Chris_Ellison ---- Thank you for sharing this observation you’ve made with us, as the feedback is always appreciated.
Moving forward, I understand from your post you have “Volume control” set to “Use Device Control”. By chance during your troubleshooting, have you tried adjusting this settings and trying some of the other options? If so what was the experience like? Same? Different?
If I choose Fixed Volume within Roon then the system Audiophilleo output volume (that is used for the USB connection to the DAC-V1) immediately goes down to 0 (as viewable from Midi Setup) and this then changes the volume of the DAC-V1 to 0 as that is setup to be controlled by the system volume of OSX.
There is then no way to change the volume as Exclusive Mode in Roon stops any user changes to the Audiophilleo volume output when music is playing and the DAC-V1 will not allow manual volume controls with the remote / volume dial as it is setup to take its volume setting from the Audiophilleo output volume…
I can get around this by setting the DAC-V1 to have manual volume control and use the Naim remote and set the volume to fixed within Roon but this then disables the really useful volume control within Roon itself.
