Last week I replaced my windows PC with a new Dell machine. This involved doing a clean install of Roon, which I managed to get up and running reasonably painlessly.
A couple of days later, the new version of Roon (build 248) was released and I accepted the update through Roon on my PC (which acts as my Roon Server), as well as updating the Roon app on my iPad and iPhone through the normal app store updates.
This morning after rebooting my PC, I tried to open Roon but the shortcuts which were placed on the desktop during last week’s installation are now broken. I cannot open or see Roon on my PC, but when I open the app on my iPad, it does find the core and I can control Roon from there and play music.
Clearly the recent update did rather more than just updating the program - it also made it effectively invisible, as far as the PC goes.
I have a feeling I’ve come across this before, and it is actually intended behaviour, but I would like a bit of ressurance, and to better understand what is going on.
So, what actually happened during this update?
Is there a way to view the Roon interface on a PC (which is acting as the server), or are you supposed to do everything through the remote device such as the iPad or iPhone? Whilst I am happy to select and play music etc through those devices, I’m much more comfortable setting things up (eg creating playlists, adding music etc) using a big monitor, keyboard and mouse (ie. via my PC). Should that be possible?
If I can’t now see Roon on my PC, how do I run updates in the future?
I spent some time creating a list of the radio stations I want to listen to in Live Radio, but this is now inaccessible, and I noticed this morning that that list of stations does not show in Live Radio on the iPad. Should it?
Sorry for all the questions, but I’m pretty confused at the moment about just what is going on following the Build 248 update…
You should be able to find Roon by using the Windows Start icon on the bottom task bar. Select the all arrow button and scroll down to the entries listed for Roon and Roon Server. Sounds like Roon Server is running as it is seen by the Ipad remote so click on Roon. That would be the Remote. Once the Remote is up Pin that to the task bar.
When I scroll down the list of applications from the Windows start icon, there is just one entry for Roon, which is listed as RoonServer.
If I click on this, nothing happens (ie. no window or program opens, or appears). I get a spinning icon for a few seconds, as though it is trying to open something, but then that disappears.
I know Roon server is up, because my iPad is connecting to it and I can run Roon (from the iPad). What I can’t seem to do, subsequent to the latest Roon update (248) is actually see the Roon application on my PC…
Any further thoughts anyone has would be much appreciated.
That is strange. When you downloaded Roon to the new pc what did you use as the source?
When I look at Roon downloads online, at the top it has Download Roon for Desktop with 2 option, one for Mac and one for windows. The one for Windows is sever and remote combined. I used that a few months back to install on my new laptop and it has both Roon and Roon Server.
From your description it sounds as if remote was there and then it wasn’t. Something is going on that I don’t understand. Hopefully someone else in the community will chime in with an answer.
I run ROCK on a NUC and the Laptop is only used as a remote but both Roon and Roon Server are there.
I think a problem with the update is the issue. In fact, in hindsight I thimk I remember Roon closing after I had clicked ‘update all’, but I don’t actually remember is coming up again.
I think I need to apply Dr Tone’s medicine, but I am uncertain as to exactly what this entails. Is the good Dr, or anyone else, able to give me an idiots guide to how to:-
“Download the Roon installer again and run it, it shouldn’t affect your server but should get you the Roon app again…”
Are you suggesting uninstalling Roon, then doing a clean re-install from scratch (rather than trying to rerun the build 248 update on the current install, which is what I had thought you were suggesting)…?
I’ve downloaded the installer, and attempted to rerun it. However, it says 'Please quit all instances of Roon Server before continuing…"
I can’t quit Roon Server, because I can’t see it (even though I know it is running). Or is there another way? As I said, idiots guide level instructions probably justified…!!
It was in the tray - albeit hidden in list accessed by a dropdown arrow.
I used the menu associated with that icon to quit the program; then reran the installer as you suggested, which appeared to complete.
I then rebooted the machine to check it came up (it’s in the start up group), which it did.
I was able to double click the icon in the tray to open the program, and subsequently used the right click menu on the icon to pin Roon to the taskbar.
All now seems to be working.
Thanks all for your help, particularly DrTone for your patience and persistence.
