Can all music data be stored on external drive w/ Mac Mini

Hello. I’m new to Roon. Plan to set it up on my new M4 Mac Mini with an external SSD drive. Will back everything up to the cloud with Backblaze in case of drive failure. Is there a way to have all Roon data on the SSD? That way, in case of drive failure, it’s all in one place on Backblaze? Or is there a better way? Thanks in advance! Gary

You need to distinguish 2 things:

  1. Local music files
  2. The Roon database

Local music files can be on the external SSD and simply updated with Backblaze.

The Roon database is on the SSD where Roon is installed. (I don’t know if Roon can be installed on an external disk, probably, but I wouldn’t do it because database performance is paramount). Anyways, the Roon database is frequently being updated, so you can’t backup the live database from the disk with Backblaze - the backup would be corrupt.

Instead, use Roon’s built-in backup mechanism, which syncs and halts the database before backing up. The backup target can also be the external disk, and this backup can then be further backed up by Backblaze.

Thanks for the great information! One more question: how do I get it to store the local music files on the external ssd? Again, thank you in advance! Gary

“It” does not store it at all. You put the music on the disk and then tell Roon where to find it. You can do so in Roon > Settings > Storage:

Before moving the files to the folder that is watched by Roon, it helps if you ensure that they are tagged correctly, at least with the basics (artist, composer, album name, track names & numbers):

There are some additional rules for multi-disc releases:

Hi @Gary_Wiener,
Thanks for writing in to ask us about this. Have @Suedkiez’s answers cleared things up for you? Do you have any remaining questions?

I think this clears up my questions. I’ll try this next week when I set up Roon and hope it all works. Thanks! Gary
