If two versions of a track are visible in Focus, is it possible to have the best quality version selected for play?
eg, In the Ambient Techno Focus shown in the attached pic, is there a way to instruct Roon to play only the best quality versions of the two duplicated Andy Scott tracks that are in the Focus playlist when I play on shuffle, and forget about the less good quality versions? Any advice would be gratefully received.
What you will find around here is that “quality” is a subjective criterion, and it’s difficult to discern, based upon metadata alone, which version of a track is higher quality. This is because it could be due to mastering, bitrate, or other subjective criteria.
If you are willing to change the playlist (removing duplicates, …) you can try
as an automated helper. As others already pointed out, the best sounding version can’t be reliably determined by an algorithm currently – so you may have to manually alter your playlist in this regard. If you do not wish to change the playlist, then I fear nothing can be done about it. A playlist in Roon is a list of specific performances to be played in a given order (as displayed/selected unless you engage random play).
Thank you both for the info. It would seem that it is beyond the scope of Roon to do what I would like it to do in this regard at present, but I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
Hi @Alan_Meldrum,
Thanks for reaching out to ask about this. In addition to what was mentioned by the other users I would also note that you have the ability to ban songs in your library. This means that Roon radio wouldn’t select these songs but they would still be playable if you manually select them. So if you know which version you prefer to hear you can ban the ones you don’t want to hear. Love it or Ban it, how to customize music discovery with Roon! – Roon Labs Of course if you have a lot of tracks with multiple versions then this may not be a feasible way of doing things but it is worth a look.
