Can the NUC One replace the Oppo? (ref#UGE83F)

That’s an interesting idea.
I just don’t need the DAC.

Thanks

I got it working through my Oppo 203. Thanks.

The problem, in the world of HiFi is that a streamer-only device, being more “audiophile” might well cost significantly more than a self-contained streaming DAC, without offering any better performance.

I use a little HiGole PC for one of my endpoints (I have it hooked to a stereo DAC/Amp, but it would work multichannel just as well). It has a small touchscreen so it works as a perfectly fine Roon client, too. A version without screen could work as a Roon Brtidge and be controlled from any other Roon client.

I’m playing a John Lennon playlist in 5.1 from Qobuz. Works well and sounds good.

Hi @Howard_Ipp,

Do you have any other questions or concerns with your Roon setup? This topic thread hasn’t received a response in a few days and it will soon auto-close due to inactivity.

You can create a post in Roon Software Discussion if you want to have a more ongoing discussion with other Roon users. Topic timers only apply to threads in Support, so your thread will remain open and visible in the Roon Software Discussion category.

Just to summarize, if you want to play 5.1 using Roon, use an HDMI cable from your Roon server to your Oppo 205 auxiliary input (assuming you’re using the main HDMI input for something else). Then, you should be able to play 5.1 to your attached surround sound system.

If your Roon server is not near your Oppo 205, it might be easier just to add another Roon server such as the NucBox G5, etc. You can switch Roon servers back and forth easily with a single Roon subscription. I have four Roon servers for various reasons.

This is a Tidal Atmos Mix being downmixed by Roon to 5.1 since I don’t have an Atmos setup. Don’t use channel mapping for this or you will lose the extra sounds that exceed your speaker setup. Evidently, Atmos downmixed to 5.1 can often sound better than a 5.1 mix.

I have added 7 Tidal albums in Atmos for my future listening pleasure.

Great explanation Jim_F

I now realise OPPO 205 cannot play multichannel with ROON when attached to the server by ethernet cable.

My server is upstairs.

The concept of more than 1 ROON server is interesting.
If I added a ROON server next to the OPPO and attached it to the oppo with HDMI, would that result in multichannel? 5.1 is good.

How does one operate 2 ROON servers simultaneously though.

I just read the latest post, but I have found out the info I need. And it can autoclose accordingly.

Thanks

Howard

Yes, that’s what I am doing. When you activate a Roon server, you will deactivate the other. It’s very easy switching back and forth. It does mean that when Roon does an update, you will have two servers to update, but not really a problem. I update 4 servers and 4 clients with no issues. You can confuse yourself occasionally if you forget you’re not connected to the server you’re trying to use.

You don’t need to keep transferring your license back and forth. You can have a ROCK/NUC just as an endpoint to feed your OPPO via HDMI. You just don’t use the Roon Server in it.

This is a similar situation to an installation of Roon on a Windows PC or a Mac. The install has the Roon GUI, a Roon Server and the Output module. These are all independent from each other, you can mix and match according to what you need.

Thanks for the info

I am staying withe OPPO and using Jriver and/or Foobar for atmos and multichannel.

I don’t see a way to do that. For me, since the Oppo is a Roon Ready device, it connects to my Nucleus over RAAT and the connection via my NucBox G5 does not show up.

EDIT: Maybe it can be set up twice in Settings - Audio.
