Describe the issue

I cannot access music stored on my Naim Core via the Roon App. Both it and my Nucleus are connected by ethernet cables through a hub. The albums are visible in the Naim App but not on the Roon App. (This has happened more than once and I have managed to reset it.). When I last had access to the full collection it was at \\uniticore-ip-address\music. Now this only gives me downloaded files. What to do?

Describe your network setup

It is set up locally but the broad band is fast 600mbps distributed on Orbi RBR860 and there are no apparent issues.

What else do you have on the Naim Core? CD rips?

Yes, CD rips.

First, a few basics to set the stage:

The Uniti Core has two directories:

  • Music\MQ for CD rips done by the Uniti Core
  • Music\Downloads for other files (downloads, etc.) that you store on the Uniti Core

The file format in Music\MQ depends on your settings:

  • Either FLAC files with embedded metadata
  • Or WAV files with the metadata in a separate XML file that has a Naim-specific format.
  • (WAV is the default setting)

With this out of the way, I suppose that Roon should see both the MQ and the Downloads folders if you add \\uniticore-ip-address\music as a watched folder in Roon.

If the MQ folder contains WAV files (without metadata), Roon may have a hard time identifying them. However, it seems that the MQ folder content worked for you previously in Roon?

I’m not sure that is going on but to get us started please post screenshots of what you see:

  • The MQ folder in your File Explorer
  • The Downloads folder in your File Explorer
  • The Roon > Storage settings

Thanks for your help on this!
I did have both ‘Music’ and ‘MQ’ set up as folders and both could see the same 399 tracks. I deleted ‘MQ’ and have just reinstated it but it still finds only 399 tracks visible. (I think both downloads and cd’s are all Flac.)

there is nothing related to this in the downloads folder

And if you go to the Uniticore/Music folder in the Mac Finder, everything is there?

No, I cant see the music in Finder, nor in a Metadatics program I have used for editing/sorting music files.
The music is only findable in the Naim app.

Interesting. If the music is not shown in other programs either, then this doesn’t seem to be a Roon problem first and foremost - Roon can only show what it can see.

As you see the missing music in the Naim app, can you actually play it with the Naim app? I wonder if the Naim app shows only a previously cached view.

Does the Naim app have an option to show the path to these tracks? Would be interesting to know where it’s looking for it.

You said that this has happened more than once and you have managed to reset it.

  • When this happened previously, was the music not shown in the Finder and other apps, either?
  • Can you remember details about how you fixed it then?
  • Did you every contact the Naim support? It seems to me that it’s more of a Naim problem than a Roon problem

Again, thank you for your interest and help so far.

The Core is connected to the system via the Nucleus so I can find an album on the Core and play it and in the App it looks like it is being played but there is no sound.

I am not aware of an option to see the path on the Naim App.

In the past I have had to reset the Roon folder in Storage and it has started working again and so I feel that I should be able to do it again. I don’t remember the details because each time it felt like magic. I suspect that this issue is with the rolling software upgrades in either Naim, Roon or both.

I’ll send an email to Naim but my thoughts are that the Core is working as it should.

Perhaps Roon techies can help?

So you can find them? From this…

…I had the impression that Roon doesn’t find them at all. Can you please clarify?

If it finds them and you can click play but there is no sound, the problem is most likely a different one than if Roon can’t find them at all.

If resetting the Roon storage folder helped in the past, did this also fix these problems in other apps?

I’m very confused at what’s going on. The simple fact that you can’t see the albums in the Finder hints at it not being a Roon problem.

Nevertheless, maybe Roon support can spot something, but you might have to wait until after the holidays. Good luck

Hey @Tim_Farmiloe,

Thanks for writing in!

Certainly, let us know what the current issue is, and if resetting your storage folder may help!

Can you set up a more simplified network connection in the meantime, and get a direct ethernet connection from your Roon Server and local storage > directly to your primary router?

We’ll be on standby for your reply!

Please note that Roon staff will be out of the office on December 24th-26th & January 1st in observance of the Christmas & New Years holiday period. Additionally, we will have limited staff available on December 27 & 30/31st . Thank you for your understanding.

Sorry! My replies have been confusing. I will try to clarify what I was trying to say.
If I select a track on the Core using the Naim App and play it, I can see the progress bar move as if playing it.
Searching in Roon, the ripped files are not found.
The reason I think that the problem can be resolved in the Roon App is that I have been successful before.
Thanks again!

Thanks for looking at this. (I think I have replied to the thread and assume you can also see that.)
Both the Core and the Nucleus are connected to a simple 4 socket Ethernet hub. How might I simplify or improve this?
I assume but do not know that the downloaded tracks are stored on the Core. (Is there storage on the Nucleus?) If so, the connections work for those tracks to play.
Atb,
Tim
