Description of Issue

(0) I can’t find a way to filter the Abum view so that only the “main” albums by a single artist are displayed. I would like to see a listing analogous to looking through a collection of physical media sorted by artist, such as one might find in a library, record store, on a rack of CDs, or on a shelf of LPs.

I’ll discuss the things I’ve tried while looking for all Carole King albums.

(1) Typing the artist’s name in the “filter” box in the Album view comes close, but it also picks up albums with the artist’s name in the title, such as “Tapestry Revisited - A Tribute to Carole King”, where the artist didn’t make the album.

(2) A focus entry for the artist can be made in the Album view starting from the artist’s Artist view page. Click “View albums in library” from the hamburger menu at the bottom left of the artist’s picture to do this.

But this picks up lots of other albums, presumably because there are covers of her songs (composer) or she did some backup singing or playing (performer) in the credits. For example, the start of the Album view created from the Arist page has only one of her “main” albums, “Writer”.

(3) Without jumping to the Album view, the Artist view has subsections for Main albums, various collaborations with other artists, and Appearances.

What I am looking for is similar to the Main subsection, though I’m not clear that list is precisely what I’m seeking as it can’t be inspected in Album view, but if the filters used to create the listing here could be transferred to the Album view, that might suffice.

(4) Starting with an unfocused, unfiltered Album view and selecting Carole King in the “PERFORMERS” filter results in many other main performers’ albums, and ditto for selecting Carole King under the “COMPOSERS” filter. Furthermore, scanning through these lists is impractical with a large collection.

I’d note that the “PERFORMERS” filter seems to produce the same results as (3), but can’t be certain of this.

It seems the correct selection of main albums would be to focus or filter on the following metadata fields shown in the “edit album” tab of the “Album editor” popup: “PRIMARY ARTIST LINKS”, “ALBUM ARTIST”, and “CREDITS” where the artist is credited as “Primary Artist” and/or “Main Personnel”. The solution would be a bit different for classical albums to find main albums by composer.

If anyone can provide support to accomplish the goal described in (0), please advise.

Thanks,
- Eric

Tag the albums you consider “Main” with a “Main” Tag and then filter by that Tag.

Thanks for the suggestion. It won’t work, though.

In (2) in my first post, all five albums are Main albums but four of them are Main albums by artists other than Carole King. They’re included because Carole King has performer or composer credits for songs on those albums.

Any other ideas?

@Rugby Ought I submit a feature request?

Yes, I think that is a feature request.
